schools w/ 4-1-4 schedule

two of the schools my D is interested in offer "Jan term" couses. One of these does exchanges during Jan tem with other 4-1-4 school so I am wondering, does anyone know if there is a web page where other schools with this schedule are listed?

If you are not talking about Elon, then you can add them to the 4-1-4 list.

I couldn't find a page, but I'm sure many colleges with 4-1-4 schedules would have such a list. Oh, and add UDelaware to the 4-1-4 list.

Carleton, I think ?

i agree with the first poster about elon. it is a wonderful school and definitely worth checking into. if you would like, i can have their admissions director send you information; he and i have maintained a close relationship even though i decided not to attend. (there were some problems with my application and i got to know him quite personally during last year's admissions process)

Carleton uses a trimester schedule with a long break from Thanksgiving to New Year's Day, not a 4-1-4 calendar.

I think Oberlin has it.

Cenre College does this. Williams too, I think.

Williams has a 4-1-4 schedule but I don't think they have an exchange arrangement for the January term.

St. Olaf in Minnesota. I don't know about exchanges, but a St. Olaf student I worked with described a school based trip to Guatemala during that Jan interim. Sounded lovely.

Linfield College i think also does thAT.

Lafayette has this calendar Studying Abroad

University of Redlands has a 4-4-1 (May term) schedule that operates in a similar manner.

Thanks all! Papa Chicken your list was especially helpful...I saw that Mt. Holyoke, U Mass Amherst and their sister schools also offer January term. It seems like a great opportunity for study abroad.

Linfield College i think also does thAT.

yup.

Add MIT to the list as well. They call their J-term "Independent Activities Period", or IAP for short.

what do you guys think is good about this type of schedule

For my son Winter Study (January term) was one of the top attractions at Williams. Kids take one course, usually something offbeat, quirky or outside of their normal spheres of knowledge. Many courses involve travel -- within the country and internationally. Independent study or individually designed programs is also allowed.

There are also lots of social activities planned that month as well as ample opportunities for winter sports. In short, it's a fun and stimulating refresher before getting back to the business of serious study in February.

As parents we were sorry that the December holidays were cut short, but on the other hand having a bored college student at home for 4-6 weeks in the winter is not always the best environment for family relations either.

This is Williams course offering for Winter Study. Always made me wish I could enlist.

I like the idea of students taking one course for a one month period. It allows them to do something outside of their major and provides an opportunity for a variety of different experiences. At Saint Mary's CA and I am sure other places as well, kids can travel abroad every Jan term, giving them an opportunity to spend a month in 4 different places over the course of their education. I think that's good.
