Schools with a Genetics Major?

Hi, I am a junior in high school with an interest in majoring in genetics, microbiology, or molecular biology in preparation for vet school. I was curious as to the best schools that offer majors in these areas. Also, if there are any opinions out there as to whether genetics, microbio, or molecular bio would be best to major in before vet school I would love to hear them. Or anyone that has majored in genetics, really. Thanks so much!

Side note....even though I have a decent chance at Ivy League schools and top private schools, they are way too expensive for me. Interested in top state schools.

As far as I know, you cannot major in genetics. As a biology major you will take a class or two in genetics though.

A lot of schools have genetics majors, including mine.

Here’s[/URL">http://www.mymajors.com/best-colleges/Genetics-major]Here’s a list of Universities with Genetics programs. On the left you can filter it to only include Public schools. Some of these may only offer Genetics as a graduate program, so be sure to check each individual department you’re interested in.

In that case, I would be careful majoring in something as narrow as genetics. Sounds like a great way to pigeon hole yourself. I think it’s best to start broad such as biology and specialize from there.

Any school with a good biology program should be fine for you. They will likely require (or at least offer) a class or two in genetics, molecular biology, and/or microbiology. A lot of “genetics” majors could probably also be called molecular biology majors, because in my experience, those programs tend to be very similar with regards to requirements.

I’d recommend you focus less on the specific name on your degree, and more on the classes that you’ll be taking. Find a school with a good biology program, as well as opportunities for you to get involved with activities that you’re interested (things that would look good for vet programs). Don’t focus too much on whether they technically have a genetics major or not. Majoring in general biology is just as good if you can still take the classes that interest you and classes that will prepare you for vet school.
