Schools with programs similar to Princeton's Bridge Year?

Hi,

I was curious as to whether or not any parents are aware of highly ranked universities/LACs (top 25) that offer an experience like Princeton's Bridge Year (specifically, teaching English to foreigners). I intend on doing a self-determined major focusing on modern languages with a minor in either history or politics, and I feel as though a gap year helping in a developing country where I could add another language to my repitoire would be perfect.

I ask because Princeton, as an Ivy, is a crapshoot for anyone. I'd like to have some more realistic options.

Just a side note, programs in India would be especially awesome. The country has just the right mix of Eastern exoticness without the fear of being arbitrarily detained by a facist asian regime or being shot at by Islamic fundamentalists. =|

Thanks in advance!

^ or being shot at by some other major religion fundamentalists, save the Budhists since I haven’t heard Budhist fundamentalists – ever! Seriously, I am not sure I agree with you about India. Anyway, my D got an awesome package from the SYA. Have you looked into that?

My point is just that it’s one of the safer regions in Asia as opposed to China or Pakistan. As far as SYA, thanks for the info. Unfortunately the only gap year available after high school with them is in Vietnam… which I’m not sure I’m comfortable with.

Can someone answer this please?

Are you looking for a gap year before college, during college, or after college?

Very few places will train and hire English teachers right out of high school. If you’d like to do that, a better bet is to finish at least a couple years of college, if not a full degree, first. Several years ago _fiona did attend a CELTA course after high school and then spent a few months teaching in southeast Asia. Search for her threads, and contact her for details.

One good post-college program worth investigating is JET which is a one to two year commitment in Japan.
