Schools with singles for freshman

I've had my own room for most of my life, and that's how I like it. Even sleepovers stress me out because I like to have my own space to relax at night. I don't believe that I'd be able to succeed in a school where I had to share a room because of how much stress it would cause me. Everyone says I'll get over it, and that's just part of college. Does any one know of schools who can garuntee singles for freshman?

^^Buy/rent your own condo near the school.

Alabama has many, many private rooms for frosh, but there is no guarantee. There are literally a few thousand of these private rooms, so there are many of them. I think there are about 5500 private rooms and the dorms are very nice.

Keep in mind that the private rooms are more expensive.

You’d need to apply soon and pay your housing deposit so that you can “be in line” (so to speak) to be able to choose one.

Williams has a high percentage of single rooms. I don’t know that they guarantee that that you’ll get one, but if you request one, the likelihood of getting it is strong.

I believe Hampshire has only singles, that was a negative for my daughter. If you have a legitimate issue for being in a single and you can get a doctors note to justify it medically and you will get a single.

MIT, Columbia and WashU have singles available for freshmen. There are no guarantees that you’ll get one, but they are available.

Don’t have the study on-hand, but I believe there is research showing that singles are actually a negative in freshmen retention rates and students in triples and quads are actually the most successful in returning for sophomore year. Seems counter-intuitive for an introvert like me, but if you can find a college that hand-matches similar students to rooms then it does make sense. Many LACs and other small schools do this, large schools just assign them randomly, which is never good.

There are singles at many colleges, W&M definitely has some available. However, if you are looking for a school that guarantees singles (or has a large amount of them) I would suggest Haverford. Most of the dorms I on the tour they showed are singles and it is very likely you will get one. If you look up comments on the ColegeNiche website, many of the comments refer to the single housing arrangements

“Over 60% of the rooms on campus are singles, organized into suites or halls ready for your group of friends to move in. Also great are the apartments, which house from two to four people who share a kitchen, common room, and bathroom. This is the best option if you like having a ton of space and 24 hour availability to your own cooking space.”

" The dorms are awesome; almost everyone gets a single, and they’re beautiful. Avoid the apartments as a freshman because they’re very detached from the rest of campus. Choose Barclay or Gummere–they’re both beautiful and very central."

Of course, it is very selective to get into in the first place, so perhaps other people could suggest some less selective schools as options

Haverford

^ Haverford does have many singles. Hampshire is nearly all singles. My son needs his “alone time” as well.

Penn. Marquette.

UChicago, Cornell, Haverford, Sarah Lawrence

Many schools have single rooms, but without a medical need, there aren’t any schools that are likely to “guarantee” a single room.

Most freshmen are single ;
