Schools You're Choosing Between

@alooknac
thank you for pointing that out you make an excellent point that I think we can all learn from

@enemyofthesun
good choice!! i approve :slight_smile:

@esperanzax06
based on the point alooknac made, I think you would do better to choose Brooks. Of course, exeter is great community and you seem like a talented individual who could do well at both schools so I just wish you the best of luck at the revisit days but also keep in mind that whatever school you choose, prestigious or not, you will matriculate to an excellent university.

And to anyone choosing between SPS and Exeter, I would suggest whichever one they liked the fit of better because I know that Exeter has more prestige, but if you look at college matriculation stats they are nearly similar, especially if you compare the ratios of number graduated to number attending top colleges! :slight_smile:

I am also in a situation to choose between schools so if you guys could help me out that would be great :slight_smile: here are the schools I am choosing from:

Kent (with a scholarship, I did not apply for financial aid but I was awarded through a scholarship program and I think it looks good on college apps?)
Lawrenceville
Middlesex
Taft
Peddie
Milton
Loomis Chaffee
The Hill
Miss Porterā€™s
Miss Hallā€™s

If you guys have any opinions, they would be much appreciated :slight_smile:
What I am looking for is academic strength as well as of course, since I am a highschooler, I want a good chance of matriculating to a top university and I know I sound naive about this issue but I guess what I am trying to say is I want top of the line academic programs and opportunities. I know lawrenceville is taking AP courses away so would that affect anything? Also strong clubs and extracurricular options

I think Iā€™m leaning towards either Lawrenceville, Milton, Taft, or Middlesex because of the strength of their academics but I am also considering Kent because well they gave me this scholarship and I know they are very welcoming but (confession!) I also think it would be good for college apps to say I got a scholarship (I sound like a hypocrite I know, just trying to be honest :stuck_out_tongue: )
so I am attending revisit days to get a feel of school but ANY opinions would be appreciated and good luck with everyone trying to make decisions! :)

Canā€™t comment on Peddie except what Iā€™ve read here. George does seem to have great arts. Are you going to the revisit day?

@liveonthestage:

Being that I was also accepted to both schools last year, maybe I can help. I had many, many interactions with the GS campus beforehand, and I knew about the Quaker life as well. The reason I chose not to attend GS was for a couple of reasons:

Many people in the area go there, and I didnā€™t want to see the same people for another 4 years.

They have a reputation, letā€™s say, of being loose on the drug and alcohol policy. I know there are pot smokers at all schools, but from what Iā€™ve heard and seen, GS is fairly tolerant of that. At Peddie, thereā€™s a 0 strike policyā€“if youā€™re caught youā€™re out. At GS they have a voting panel comprised of teachers and students, and you need a certain number of votes to be kicked out.

FA. GS gave me no FA, Peddie gave me a lot.

Ultimately, I chose Peddie over GS because of academics, buildings, and technology. Academics-wise, I think Peddie has more solid science, language, and English programs, and that speaks to me. True, GS has the IB program, but that isnā€™t important to me. The buildings at GS are beginning to wear down, and while itā€™s not terrible, it shows. Some buildings donā€™t have AC, others just look tired and scuffed. Lastly, technology. When I last visited GS they had chalkboards and computer labs. At Peddie, each room is outfitted with Smart boards and whiteboards. Every student receives a Toshiba, which goes for around $1000+. I think the technology definitely is more prominent at Peddie, and thatā€™s something I look for.

Lastly, sports. If you like to horse-back ride, GS has the upperhand because they offer that. However, from what it seems, Peddie has better sports teams. Peddie belong to the MAPL league. All I know is when my friends at Peddie play GS, they win :slight_smile:

Hope I helped! PM me with any questions you may have.

Exeter parent that I am, Iā€™d never say that Exeter is more prestigious than SPS. More well-known by the general public, yes, but those who know prep schools know SPS.

Eileenbeth: Iā€™d say your description of Exeter is right on. Itā€™s a great school for those for whom it fits, but itā€™s definitely not for everyone.

Choosing between NMH and Loomis, ruled out backups Kent and Berkshire? Pros and Cons anyone?

Anyone has suggestions on choosing between PA and Roxbury latin school? One is boarding and one is day school. DS fits in either one in personality and academic achievements. Financial cost is not an issue, full scholarship covers at both schools.

Well, obviously one is all boy and small, the other is coed and big. Usually a kid doesnā€™t like both. If he feels like he fits in both equally well and likes both equally, then I guess you can just flip a coin - there is no wrong choice really!

@talizorah

Do you want more traditional and ā€˜new englandā€™ or more innovation and progressive? If traditional, Deerfield; if post-modern and innovative Choate. As a Choatie myself, I am biased to my school and recommend it 100% to students who see the school as a good fit.

@laughalittle thanks for your info! FA is not a problem at George though, but you have helped me a lot!

@livesonthestage: No problem!

Full Disclosure: Iā€™m a Deerfield Graduate

In regards to Deerfield/Hotchkiss/Choate I feel like that could be a very tough decision and one that should probably be made based off of feel while visiting. They are all fairly social and also strong academically. Some may argue that Hotchkiss is a little less social and Choate a little less academic but Iā€™d say that wonā€™t make much of an overall difference.

I noticed the critique of Deerfield was that it was less modern. I find this quite interesting and will do my best to respond candidly and if you have specific examples of what you think is dated Iā€™d love to hear them. I find that Deerfield has modernized everything that needs to be and left the rest alone. The Koch Center has some of the best facilities of any boarding school (check out the planetarium) and the Campus internet (100MB/s) and Computers are fantastic. Now it terms of ā€œtraditionsā€ that Deerfield prides itself in I can see the aura of being old-school but I just canā€™t think of any. The largest thing I can think of are the uniform and sit down meals, yet I think that almost anybody would come to enjoy those. Sure, the sit down meals can be a PITA sometimes and you might not like your table, but it allows you to get to know many more faces on campus. With the uniform, I didnā€™t mind it but I can understand that some would.

If you are choosing between these three schools youā€™re in really good shape wherever you choose! But donā€™t go to Choate /Joke

@DAgrad

uniform? wait Deerfield has a uniform? I thought it was just a really strict dress code?

Preplife

Sorry, you are correct, strict dress code during the class day. Iā€™ve always used uniform and dress code somewhat interchangeable but I understand the difference.

Outside of the class day itā€™s pretty much anything goes.
