Science at Georgetown

I'll be a senior in the fall and I am looking at schools, and Georgetown appeals to me for a number of reasons. I have very diverse interests, and I have no idea what I am going to end up majoring in. On one hand, I have a real passion for biology and the sciences, but on the other I love learning about political science and government. So, I have been trying to look at schools that are strong in both of these areas- biology and political science. I haven't found a lot of information about science at Georgetown. Any insight?

All I know is that they are in the process of constructing a new science building that should be complete by fall 2012. A lot of the current science majors are excited about that.

Thanks! Yes, I’ve heard about the new science building. That is very awesome!
Anyone have any other info?

@cb1024 I’m so happy you are looking into Georgetown. My son was just accepted into the SFS and quite a few of the students he has met recently are very excited about the Science, Technology and International Affairs major within the SFS (especially with the new science facility well under way). [Requirements - STIA Major - Georgetown University](http://bsfs.georgetown.edu/majors/stia/requirements/)

This combination in Subfield C - Biotechnology & Global Health might be something that appeals to your varied interests. Good luck!

I’m entering Georgetown in the fall. I’m a biology major and am in the College, which has the traditional science majors: biology, chemistry, and physics. However, you can be part of the pre-med track (if you’re interested in that…don’t mean to make assumptions) with any major and any school. Georgetown isn’t particularly known for sciences, but the reputation has deservingly grown, and the science students are as well-qualified as those of other top schools. The science faculty is very respected, and med school acceptance rates are very high.

Other key points include GERMS, which is a student-run EMT service that looks great on a resume. Also, the city location allows invaluable opportunities at local hospitals and cancer centers.

If you’re interested in both biology and government, I would consider applying for the College rather than SFS. The College has a government major, and double-majoring is a possibility. Also, as a sophomore, you can apply for specialized biology majors, such as neurobiology (what I plan to choose) and biology of global health. The College is truly the best for people who don’t know exactly what they want to do. It is, however, statistically the toughest admit of the four schools, so make sure your stats are high, and you’ll have a chance. You can always change schools later.

Both the above options sound very appealing to me. I will have to do some more research before I decide whether I want to apply to the college or SFS. Thanks for the info!
