Science/Engineering Programs for Non-minority Males

We are trying to identify which summer programs my junior S can apply to for 2010. I think his stats are high enough (Ranked 3/597, consistently receives 215-220 on practice PSAT tests) and he has a bent towards math (complains his BC Calc class moves WAY to slowly.) He has a general interest in engineering, but needs a good summer program to flesh out his skills.

I am familiar with the programs that are recommended on this forum -- SSP, RSI, Clark Scholars, TASP -- and am trying to determine which programs he has a chance at attending. So many are targeted for underrepresented students (minorities, females.) Others aren't so clear whether they are interested in white males.

We wasted our time last year applying to YESS at Caltech. They, too, ask for applications from underrepresented kids......then go on to say that "anyone who thinks they may benefit" can apply. He was turned down. That was a first for us. I don't want to go ask for the multiple recs from teachers, have him waste his time writing essays, and gather up official transcripts and test scores if he doesn't have a chance at other programs.

Is there anyone who has attended these programs and can speak to whether white males are admitted?

I participated in PAVE (a Vanderbilt summer program) that was great experience for up-and-coming scientists/engineers. It is a 6-week program that allows the participants to do 3 2-week stints in different subjects that they choose. I am a white male who got accepted. I participated in 2004 but I’m sure it’s still a great program. It was the best summer of my high school career.

I currently attend the University of Michigan and am studying aerospace engineering. PAVE definitely helped me get in.

This sounds great. Thanks, cestrin! I’ll go check it out right now.

Math camps might work for your son. Hampshire math camp, PROMYS, USA-Canada math camp, Ross math camp - and there are others.
Also, EPGY summer camps.
and Carnegie-Mellon summer programs?

Thanks geomom, we actually looked at Hampshire and Ross last summer when someone redirected us to YESS at Caltech, specifically for its engineering bent. S has already done AMSP and wants a science/engineering gig.

These are nice suggestions, but I’m really trying to find out if anyone out there has attended one of the elite programs such as SSP, Clark Scholars, YESS or RSI who is non-minority. And I also mean non-asian. Do we even waste our time with these apps and recs.

RSI is about half boys and the overwhelming majority of the attendees are non-minority.

Givings - I was wondering if you have found any viable programs for your S to apply to. My S sounds like a mirror image of yours.
