Science fair

What kind of project does it take to get to any major competition? I just won first place in technology at my county's science fair.
So here's what it would take for me to get to Intel:

County: Already awarded first
Regional: I have to get 1st
State: Must win 1st

Just to let you know, I'm a freshman and 5 people showed up for the High School level county science fair (including me), 4 of them in my category. What will it probably take for me to win at the regional level? Is there anywhere I could look at projects online and see what level of work I would be competing against at pre-Intel levels. (Particularly what regionals.)

Does anyone know of any really good science fair tip websites?

You can find abstracts online - I know Siemens at least has them, not sure about Intel ISEF. Those are probably at the level of the top Intel projects.

First, science research should never be performed for the sake of either gaining a hook for college or winning a prestigious award. Most winners of these caliber awards already are superb students and could care less of the renown it grants them (although I'm sure its pleasing to them).

With that said, when it comes to competitions, like the college admissions process, much of the outcome can be swayed by factors out of your control. Know that no matter how good your project is, a judge may not like your topic, may doubt your work, or a simpler project may be chosen. To say the least, judges can be very biased/odd . For example, the regional best of fair was given to a freshman, I took first in category but ended up taking best of fair at state and first in cat. at ISEF. It's very random and the best you can do is just present well.

Moreover, you are a freshman, so you have 3 years to gain experience and further refine your ideas. Take a look at westinghouse for abstracts.

good luck

^holy momma. Why don't internationals have these opportunities?

Actually there is such a fair in India. Where are you from?

China .

ISEF goes to china too I think. I was watching shows on tudou and I saw some ad for ISEF.

aigiqinf, you can go onto ISEF's site and look for affiliated fairs. Usually on those websites they post up what projects won and whatnot. May I ask what your project is on?

It's more about how good a speaker you are than what your research is actually about. Even if your research is truly groundbreaking, no one will give a damn at ISEF unless you can explain it well in ten minutes.

Well my project is on calculator accuracy...

I know it isn't about the awards... and I don't really expect to even get to state, and if I do I just hope to get some special award.... and I know I won't place...

Thanks for the help. I really just want to have an idea of what competition will most likely be like. I know at my regional fair there haven't been more than 2 people in the technology competition since 1999.
