Science "Lab" --How do you do it?

My daughter is in an independent school program through our school district. To make a long story short...the program does not offer science "lab" courses.

How have others in these kind of programs satisfy the science "lab" requirements for those colleges that require a lab as a prerequisite ie: UC schools?

I have tried to find on-line lab courses but to no avail..any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Keystone science classes have lab components. AP Chem comes with a microscope (and you get to keep it!). They come with lab kits from here:

applicannot-I am not familiar with Keystone…can you give me a link to this program.

My son previously did the same program as my daughter, he actually did his wet lab using one of these kits but his school did NOT end up indicating this as a lab course on his transcript. I was trying to find an approved on-line wet lab course so she does not have the same problem when it comes time to apply to colleges.

Thanks

You may also want to check out Laurel Springs School ([Accredited Homeschool | College Prep Homeschooling | Laurel Springs School](http://www.laurelsprings.com)). They are a wasc accredited distance learning program. Their science courses incorporate kits from Labpaq. Laurel Springs has both text-based courses and on-line courses for many of their classes. This is important if you are trying to meet UC admission requirements as the UC’s do not accept all on-line courses.

Hi schoolsurfer…my son actually was enrolled in the Laurel Springs program for a few year. I have looked at the UC Doorways approved course list for both, Laurel Springs does not have any approved science courses listed, and Keystone does not even show up…so for our purposes neither of these on-line programs will work :(

For anyone interested in finding if a course is UC approved:<a href=“A-G Policy Resource Guide”>A-G Policy Resource Guide;

This is a very important tool in that a lot of on-line schools do not have any clue about UC approved courses or that a particular course needs to be approved for UC purposes for it to count for a-g requirements.

My daughter has just completed some courses through National University Virtual High School and the elective courses she took have been approved (but they do not have any approved science courses).

If anyone is thinking of going the UC route it is imperative that you check to make sure the courses have been approved.

Another option is taking classes at a community (or other local) college. Many will allow students based on SAT scores or their own internal tests.

Check this out also. It appears that a student can satisfy a-g requirements through qualifying SAT Subject test scores or AP test scores.

UC requirements are way too complicated. In Maryland, you just need a diploma and some evidence of coursework - but they’re not particular what.

Thanks for the link schoolsurfer…we didn’t know about that option!! So you can take the course through an unapproved provider but if a student gets the required score on the SAT subject test…than it counts.

Sockhermom - I think that is how it works. Applicannot is right - UC requirements are very complicated. When I’m not sure of how their requirements work, I call admissions at one of the UCs and ask. Beware though, I’ve gotten conflicting information. There is an admissions rep. at one of the UCs who seems to be very helpful and knowledgeable. If you pm me, I can find her name for you.
