I was told during orientation that TAs teach the labs ( at least chem lab that is). Is this true? And thus would it not matter what teacher I choose?

Thanks again.

Technically, there is a Prof who is charge of the lab portions of Chem/Bio et al. But yes, a TA runs the show on a daily basis. And yes, the TA assignment is the luck of the draw, part of which depends on their own class schedule and thus, availability.

I’ve been wondering this too. Do you know anything else about the science programs (I’m assuming you want to be a Bio or Chem major)? How rigorous – how well AP Bio prepares you, etc.

Yea, all about luck with TAs. Even if you like your TA first semester and want him or her for second semester, it’s hard to make that happen because they usually don’t get their assignments until right before the lab actually starts. Doesn’t matter what teacher you choose because you’ll never even see that teacher. There is one professor that oversees all of the lab sections and she acts as the professor, but you rarely see her.

For chemistry labs anyway, you have a randomly assigned TA. All chemistry TAs are graduate students. I don’t think there’s any way to request a particular TA, but the lab assignments themselves are the same for all sections and are posted online.

Occasionally, the “lab technicians” and a professor may visit the labs to check that everyone is following the proper safety protocol.

Oh yeah, remember to NEVER leave the lab with your gloves on!
