Right now I am an Environmental Science major, but I want to minor in music. Do you think this is a good idea? I've already looked into the required classes, and they would fit in my schedule, albeit require some work. I play many different instruments and music is a huge part of my life; after being in band throughout grade school, I'm finding it hard to not do anything music related in college. Some people have told me that it's better to minor in something that will enhance your degree, and others have told me that it's better to minor in something that you enjoy, regardless of how well it ties in to your major. Which is it? My environmental science professor told me to just concentrate on science, and the music director says that I can definitely be a music minor and there won't be problems fitting it into the work load of a science major. What is your opinion?

If you find taking music classes helps you relax from your science classes, then go for it. On of my good friends in undergrad was an engineering & music performance double major.

Is there any reason you don’t just join some sort of extracurricular activity to get your music itch scratched?

I think you should focus on maximizing your employability in college. ES is kind of mediocre for employment probably slightly better than chemistry but not likely to get you a great career. I rather get a business minor.
