Science Olympiad

Hi, I am looking to get into Science Olympiad next year (my junior year) and I was wondering what the prestige is and what it entails. I am also wondering what some good events are. I am fairly into Chemistry, but I'm open to other fields. Thanks

There’s not really any “prestige” unless you go to a school that goes to Nationals (and then you also medal at Nationals). But it’s VERY fun.

The expected list of events for next year are:

Astronomy
Anatomy & Physiology
Boomilever
Bungee Egg Drop
Chemlab
Circuit Lab
Complex Machines
Designer Genes
Disease Detectives
Dynamic Planet
Elastic Glider
Entomology- Bugs
Experimental Design
Forensics
Maglev
Material Science
Mission Possible
Remote Sensing Or Geo Mapping
Rocks and Minerals
Scrambler
Technical Problem Solving*
Water Quality
Write It/Do It

If any of these tickle your fancy, I’ll explain what they are

Also, if you do happen to medal to Nationals, the college that it’s hosted at tends to offer full rides, but it’s not usually hosted at prestigious places. (This year is Wright State Univ. Last year was UCF, next year will be UCF again, eventually it’s set for University of Nebraska)

Tell me what state you’re in & what school and I’ll be able to tell you what competition is like in your state

Okay, on topic first: you can have quite a bit of fun in the events that are related to a future science major. But my recommendation: do not stick to this, because chances are you’ll do better at an overlooked event, and you’ll actually get to “explore the world of science.” Try everything (unless you’re not good at building)! It’s pretty fun learning about various topics, and I’d suggest you’d do so before limiting yourself in college :)

The prestige for us is just getting 2-3 medals at regionals… Gosh. There already are killer teams left and right at that level. So happy that the team that has an 8 year nationals streak (AKA go to this magnet school and you’re at nationals) in the region finally lost states by 1 point. :stuck_out_tongue: We’ve had members that beat national 1st place teams at the state and/or regional competition but the closest we’ve ever been to nationals was 2nd at states. So everyone holds a grudge on that team and celebrates when they finally lose ;)

^ you compete in Norcal, don’t you?

I don’t think my school has a very good program because I believe it was only started maybe 2 years ago but my school is in Southern California. I’m looking into the more chemistry related events because that has been my favorite science so far but I’m fairly open to everything. Except for the building, I suck at that kind of stuff haha

Ooh…Southern Cal, is tough

Look into Forensics & Chemlab i suppose.
You may also like Write It/Do It or Water Quality
And there’s a few others that I’m forgeting
