Science Person Self-Studying AP History?

Hi CC,

I’m a “science person,” and naturally, History is my greatest fear.
However I am considering taking an AP History exam before I graduate in order to widen my field of knowledge and become a more well-rounded scholar.
I do attend a school that offers no AP classes, meaning I will have to self-study if I decide to take the exam; and if I do self-study, I will probably have to start around January after I escape the application hell.
By the way, I am pretty good at memorizing and writing (I think), but not so good at detecting patterns or drawing connections between information.

So, what do you guys think? Is it worth a try?
Also, I’m thinking of World History. Is WH easier than USH?
Thank you in advance-

I think World History is honestly a little harder than APUSH because it doesn’t have as large of a curve for a 5. APUSH is generally more forgiving, but the test itself might be a little bit harder since it goes into more detail.

yeah APUSH is harder than world.

I mean, it’s worth a try. Since you’re not using the score to get into college, you really have nothing to lose. Colleges won’t rescind your acceptance just because of a bad score…I say go for it if you have the time.

History is all about reading, the more you read the higher the score/grade you will recieve. Just read diligently and you can score a passing grade for sure and a 4 or 5 as well. Try a social science that interests you, psych? Good luck!

Hmm. I’ll have to think about it, but if I do take a History AP it will be World History.
By the way, @rfav32 I did take psychology this year.

I took World History last year, and while it includes extensive reading and memorization, the most important thing is to make connections and analyze trends. I suspect the same for the other Histories, so unfortunately “detecting patterns and drawing connections” can’t be avoided.

By the way eugini95, which school do you go to? I live in Vancouver as well :)

@potatochipsdojo.
I’ve already been identified once so I don’t like sharing personal information, but PW.
WAIT… how did you know I live in Vancouver? HOW?!

^^^ Are you being honest or facetious? It only says under your location 0.o

Calm down dude; on your posts under your name it says “Vancouver”.

Thanks for pointing that out. I actually didn’t know cause I’m not used to CC yet.
Sorry, I got a little overwhelmed.
… should change privacy settings.

I’m a science person as well, and decided last year to take AP Euro since all my friends were taking it (horrible I know). 30 kids signed up, 12 remained at the end of the year.

That said, it was a great class to take. Science and humanities are linked more than you think, and it’s really cool to think about how science affects society. Plus, it’s really useful in a ton of other subjects (especially English and Philosophy).

In your situation, I’m not sure about self-studying a history class. I self studied AP World History last year (got a 4), but I also took the AP Euro class at school (got a 5). There is just a large workload involved. I haven’t taken APUSH, but I’ve heard that AP World is easier. AP World was definitely easier than AP Euro though…

Good luck on your tests!
