I am a freshman right now at ug and I am currently deciding between analytical chemistry + lab and orgo I. Lots of people are choosing orgo apparently...but it is recommended to take analytical; however, not mandated as both extend concepts of general chemistry in two different paths. Could someone please help me or atleast guide me into picking which one first out of the two options I've placed myself in? Please don't tell me to refer to my advisor because right now the breaks have dawned over all unis and the advisor would be of little help anyways. Also, can anyone tell me how the lab portion is like for analytical? I should have asked my roomate and floor mates but they are mainly first years too so I doubt any one of them have taken either analytical or orgo already.

Seriously? 148 views and noone wants to make a suggestion? Anyone :?

Personally, I’d retake general chemistry. There is no rush to take orgo (a class that will be filled with a lot of competition with more experience than you). Retaking general chem is an easy A, will help you solidify your understanding, and there are a few schools that don’t accept AP credit unless you take additional classes in that subject. What are your other classes this semester.

As of now, Med.School require Gen. Chem. and orgo. I am not aware for any particular reasons for your personal desire to take analytical (I do not know what it is anyway). You basically have to decide, based on your reasons. How anybody here will know?

Are you attending a CA quarter-based school by any chance?

I know D1 (who did her freshman year at CA public that ran quarter classes) took analytic chem as her 3rd quarter freshman chem class. It was the standard track for pre meds since you need 3 quarters to equal 2 semesters of general chem.

I think I didn’t explain myself well there, my bad. I’ve already taken general chem and have finished the I and II sequence. My problem is that now I have two choices: analytical or orgo. The analytical lab is considered orgo I lab because the Orgo I course does not have a lab portion. I don’t know if I should take analytical first or should I wait the course and its respective lab for the Orgo I class. This would have been a lot easier to understand had I explained this much earlier as I now realize that other colleges don’t have it laid out like this as my college does.

@gullible,

I am a chem major and at my school we do a 3 credit analytic/bioanalytic chemistry lab after ochem I/II. It’s an intense lab experience to prepare you for the rigor of pchem labs. As you said, every college may do things a little different than the others. The only way to get specific guidance is through your dept. adviser.
Good luck.
