Sciences?

I am a rising senior at Leland High School, a competitive public school in the Bay Area and a prospective freshman at Santa Clara University.

However I'm a bit hesitant on choosing that as my choice of college if I get in however.

My main concern is that while I will primarily be a business major if I get in there since their business program is extremely well known, I have not heard much in the ways of other departments, particularly in the way of sciences.

I would like to explore and/or double major or minor in a biological or environmental science, but I have not heard very much about the science programs at SCU.

If anyone could give me a little more details on the life sciences there and their reputation, please let me know.

Thanks in advance :)

Sorry, xcruciat0r, but SCU’s sciences are about on par with other comparable schools. A good chunk of years ago those depts were getting a little more action, but especially in recent years the interest and suuport for them on campus has been so-so. In fact, just a couple months ago there were some student led revival efforts for the student garden on campus by thorwing events centeres around it (bio and enviro kids) since its maintainence had steadily declined in recent years, but if I recall correclty it didn’t have the effect the small pact of students were hoping for.

Does SCU offer those science majors for which you’re interested?
Yes
Are those departments headed by great staff and faculty with much experience in the field?
Yes
Will your science major from SCU be universally more respected in an employment environment than other comparable schools?
No

I wouldn’t dwell on it too much if you know you will have a primary focus on a business related major and if at this point the science is just more of an interest to you - I would still apply if I were you and was seriously considering SCU as the school to attend.

FWIW, a co-worker attended SCU and double majored in Accounting and Chemistry. They went on to use the accounting degree, but not the chem one. So of course this type of thing is possible, but you can tell they probably had a lot more opportunities open up for them with the BSC in Accounting vs the BS in Chemistry from SCU.
