In some high schools, students are required to complete a certain number of community service hours prior to graduation. Some people think community service is a good requirement because they think students will benefit from this experience. Other people think schools should not require community service because students will resent the requirement and, as a result, will not benefit from the experience. The significance of community service for high-schoolers has been a hotly debated issue. Some believe such activities will prove beneficial to students while others believe students are uninterested and thus the service is a waste of time.
Though America is based on freedom and choice, there should be certain mandatory requirements for high-schoolers - including that of community service. The experience and wisdom gleaned through community service is irreplaceable and invaluable. Such knowledge can never be obtained in the classroom. Thus, I believe that community service should be a requirement for high schoolers across the nation.
First, community service provides students to work in a somewhat professional environment, teaching them how to behave and properly interact with all kinds of people. For example, famous Texas politician, Lloyd Benson, attributes his charisma and his ability to effectively communicate to his teenage experiences mainly that of volunteering around his neighborhood. The mandatory community service compelled him to step outside of his comfort zone and taught him to properly interact with people. Without this experience, Benson would never have been able to advance as far in politics as he did.
From my personal experience, I believe volunteering and community service teaches invaluable life lessons and provides a unique experience. I currently volunteer at Stanford Hospital and Clinics, which has been an extremely eye-opening experience. I have been able to meet all kinds of patients and people from all around the world. My time there has taught me the value of life, espicially after seeing the various patients and families. Furthermore, my service there has taught me to be responsible and curteous as I must complete my tasks with the utmost care and caution.
In addition, community service greatly strengthens students' college applications and resumes. Through extensive service, students can show their involvement in the community and how they are productive during their free time.
While some may say that community service doesn't help disgruntled and unwilling students, there are various types of community service - providing all kinds of students with the chance of volunteering for something they love and are passionate about. Those who are interested in medicine can volunteer at their local hospital. Others who like books and literature can help their community by volunteering at their local library. There are many forms of community service, providing all kinds of students with an opportunity to volunteer for something they love.
In conclusion, community service should be a mandatory requirement for high-schoolers around the nation. Such service can greatly help teach students professionalism and life lessons. For those who claim students are disinterested, there are many forms of community service that suit different interests. Overall, the concept of community service in high school leads to a more knowledgeable and experienced student generation.</p>
