Score my essay? Thanks!

Hello! My name is Sasha and I'm 16. I'm currently a student in a french school, therefore english is not my mother tongue. I took my first SAT on May 2014 and achieved a score of 1900 which is good. Unfortunately, where I struggle most is in the essay section. I would really appreciate if you could read my essay and score it from 2 to 12 (if you could mention my strong and weak points, would be amazing!). Thank you xx

ESSAY PROMPT: What are your thoughts on whether it matters if a person stops setting goals and dreams for himself or herself?

--

Goals and dreamshave tha ability to change someone’s life. They are, therefore, crucial for a person to have something to live for. Ambition has led to Revolutions, to celebrities’ ascent and to the making of masterpieces.

For examples, the French Revolutioni is one transformation that was guided by people’s dreams of a better society. In 1789, and in the years that followed, there was a constant struggle for equal rights for every french citizen: only higher classes had to access to privileges. Due to thousands of people’s aspirations, a Constitution was finally written, declaring equality amongst all citizens. Centuries later, the French government continues to use this Constituion to create laws and rights equitable for everyone. People’s ambitions led to this Revolution and consequently to the society we all know and cherish today.

A very famous example of a celebritie’s ascent is Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo is a portuguese soccer player that only had one goal: become the best in the world. Unfortunately, he was born in an impoverished family and had to train harder than any other player. A couple of years later, he became a proficient player and his skills were rapidly noticed. In 2003, he was signed for a 15 millions euros contract with Manchester United. Since, his career boosted quickly: Ronaldo is now the highest paid soccer player and his estimated wealth is about 200 millions euros. His goals and dreams made him who is today.

Literary examples also demonstrate how important it is for someone toset dreams for himself. Les Misérables written in 1862 by Victor Hugo. This masterpiece follows the lives of several characters who live in a penurious and dishonest society. Fantine, for example, was a poor woman who had to give away her daughter, Cosette, in order to provide for her a better life. Unfortunately, the family in which Cosette stayed, demanded an increasing amount of money by deceiving Fantine into thinking her daughter was ill. Fantine ended up penniless due to the family’s greed. Victor Hugo had only one goal: change people’s view of their society by writing a realistic point of view of a lower class. In the nineteenth century, his book was severily criticized because it brought a new perspective on society. Nowadays, it is considered one of the greatest books ever written due to its depiction of a deprived nation.

These three examples show that is important to have dreams and goals in order to accomplish something. Indeed most of history’s successes were created by an ambition born in every human being’s mind.

PS: it is only a first draft.

Hello Sasha,
I think out of 12, your essay would score an 7 or 8. The grammar is good just check your spelling. You should look into adding more variation to your sentences. For instance, instead of saying: Unfortunately, he was born in an impoverished family and had to train harder than any other player you could write Impoverished, a dedicated Ronaldo put forth all his efforts into soccer (or football) and eventually became one of the best players in the world. It’s a good idea to open with adjectives from time to time. Also in one sentence, I summed up Ronaldo’s story. Granted, it’s not his whole story. I didn’t mention the contract or anything because that’s not what the essay is about. You are supposed to keep your examples short and relevant. Perhaps you could talk about the extent to which his dreams motivated him. You could say he started by… (I don’t know how much he practiced but talk about his dedication in practicing). After you are done talking about him, remind the reader of your purpose. You can say Because of his dreams, Ronaldo was motivated and was therefore able to become one of the best players in the world. A couple more things: never be vague. In your French Revolution example, talk about a specific person. I know he’s probably not the most like person in France but consider Robespierre and how he had a goal of having equality for the French people. Correct me if I am wrong but didn’t he start a purge which killed the king and Marie Antoinette? His goal for equality caused him to uproot an entire way of life. From then on, nothing about the monarchy or even government in general in France would ever be the same. Also, make sure to go into elaborate detail about how your example is relevant. Finally, I recommend you use examples that you like. I have never used a literary example simply because I hate reading. I always used examples from history and movies or television. Because I liked my examples so much, I have never gotten below an 11 on the essay. Best of luck to you, Sasha. I know it can be hard to learn English grammar as a foreign student but if it’s any consolation colleges in the US don’t really care about SAT Writing if you are an international student. Best of luck.
