Scoring: General vs. Revised GRE

Hi all,

I took the GREs this morning and didn't do as well as I was hoping for the programs I am planning on applying to for Fall 2012 (530 Q, 660V). If I decide to re-take the exam, it will have to be in the revised format, and so I am naturally wondering how the scores between the two will be reconciled? Will grad schools receive both scores, in the old and new format?

Thanks for your feedback!

I was reading up on this last night, and while I’m not completely clear on all of the details, my understanding is that the scale between the two will be different. The score from each section will be between 130 and 170 in one point increments, while the scale for the AW section will remain the same.

If you take the test in August or September (which is half-priced, by the way) you won’t receive your scores until mid-November (not sure if you get an instant on-screen score or not) after they’ve run the statistical analyses on all of the tests so far to determine percentiles and such. At that point they’ll be publishing conversion charts and sending them to graduate programs so that they can compare the scores of new and old GREs.

I think that they’ll also be including an estimate of what the old score would be in the new scale, but I’m not sure on that account. I know that if you send a score report, the school will receive the scores for all new and old GRE tests you’ve taken.

ETS allows you to choose to send only all of your subject test scores, only all of your general test scores, or all of your subject and general scores. When you send general test scores an explanation will be included to account for the different scoring formats.
