Screwed up a quarter... How bad is it going to look?

Places I'd like to transfer to:
- NYU (Second)
- Boston U. (First choice) - College of Communications
- UCSB - TAG
- UMass Boston
- Emerson (Third)
- University of Washington, Seattle

Current stuff:
GPA: 3.73
Major: Journalism and/or political science

Fall 2010
English 1A: A-
Mandarin 1: A+
Journalism: A
Pre Calc I: B+

Winter 2011
English 1B: B/B+
Trigonometry (Pre Calc II): D or C
Journalism: A
Mandarin 2: A

I have a chance in getting a D in my math class this quarter (Winter 2011) and I don't know how that will do with the private schools I'm planning to apply to. I know for a fact that BU encourages all transfer students to finish at least pre calc, but UC's don't really care for it since it doesn't transfer.

I'm mostly worried about BU because it's my first choice. When I apply in the fall, I plan on sending in an extensive portfolio and recommendation from my adviser.

How much will the D screw up my admissions? Should I retake trig anyway and have the grade be replaced in my GPA but still have the D on my transcript? Should I not worry about it since it doesn't really apply to my major? I took it in high school too and I got a D, so I'm REALLLLLLLY worried.

Take a deep breath, and calm yourself down about this. Then run, do not walk, to the math help center (or whatever it is called) on your campus. Sit down with the tutors there, and work out a plan for how you can improve your grades in math. Since you have had this trouble before with Trig, you may also want to pay a visit to the disability services office, and ask about formal screening for dyscalculia. Lastly, you need to find out which math courses are required for graduation from the places you would like to transfer to. Is there an option that doesn’t require Trig?
