Screwed up freshman?

I screwed up my grade nine but my academic average score improved by more than 10 percent in one year and got straight As in grade 10 and 11. My school and the school in the province I live in usually calculate GPA using grade 10 and onward.

Does my grade nine grades affect my chances of getting in to Cornell?

I'm willing to bet that you know full well that unless a college specifies that 9th grade averages are not taken into consideration (e.g. Princetion), those numbers will be taken into consideration to a certain extent. Perhaps your real question is how much of an impact your freshman grades will have on your overall chances. In that case, they may be on par with 1st semester senior grades in terms of importance (this is debatable) and are certainly less important than your sophomore and junior year grades. Also, since you have shown an upward trend in grades, the adcoms may be more lenient with your performance in freshman year. Ultimately I believe that, if they take into account your entire application, your freshman grades will not have as much of an effect on your chances as you might think, assuming everything that you stated is true.

If you haven't applied yet, I suggest you try to augment the parts of your application that you still have control over (your essays in particular). If you've already applied, then this discussion is virtually pointless since there's not much that you can do, especially about your grades from 3 years ago.

Does it matter if our senior high is from gr. 10~12, not from gr. 9~12 (I do not live in the U.S.)?

I heard that in Taiwan, people just send grades from grade 10~12, since that's their senior high as well.
I am applying next year; I will also phone Cornell personally.

Any comments?

If the college requires averages from grades 9-12, you can bet that your high school will send all of them.

You're not alone, my senior high is also from 10-12 (7-9 is junior high). However, in 9th grade, our principal pointed out to us that every year from 9th grade onwards is fair game for colleges. To cap it all, my school sends us copies of our official transcipts and my 9th grade averages are on it. As I said before, there's nothing that you can do about this now. Just focus on strengthening the rest of your application.

Hmmm... I went to ask my counselor today and she said that my transcript will ONLY include grades from 10~11 and 12 mid-term, since our transcripts are controlled by the provincial ministry of education, not by individual school. I am kinda confused with the whole transcript system in my province.
