I'm currently a sophomore in highschool, and I'm extremely worried about colleges as I'm entering my junior year. I feel like I screwed up my entire highschool career with my freshmen year GPA: 3.41/4.00 scale.

I actually had all A's my freshmen year, with the only exception being an F in Geometry... but I still ended the year with an F in Geometry.

However, in my sophomore year, I currently have a 3.76/4.00 GPA. I also competed in the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair, am the captain of my debate team, participate in MUN, do science research internships, and volunteer teaching English as a second language. I'm in all honors courses this year as well. The only big problem with my sophomore year is a C in my first semester of Honors Chemistry.

For junior year, I'll be in 2 AP courses and all honors while simultaneously doing International Science Fair's, science research internships, volunteering, debating, and doing MUN.

Have I seriously screwed up my college chances, or am I still okay? I'm just feeling major anxiety right now.

Can you retake it for a better grade? What’s your school’s policy?

I understand your stress. My D had a really rough Sophomore year. No F’s but a sea of B’s and C’s. She was in a very poor schooling environment which we changed but she took responsibility for her part of it too. She started junior year with a 3.4 total gpa. Nothing but straight A’s in challenging classes since but she was only able to bring that to a 3.64 by application time. 3.7uw/4.25w by mid-year reports. Like you, D was really freaked out.

You have to remember that most colleges aren’t all that competitive. A 3.7 qualifies you for most of them! D applied to a wide range of schools. She wrote her essay about that period of time. She made sure to have strong recommendations. She gained strong leadership positions in her areas of interest. With a 3.64 and good ACT scores she applied to a few safeties EA and was accepted with large merit scholarships (20K to 25K a year.) I admit, she applied to 3 top 20 schools which resulted in rejection but then 90 percent of kids got rejected right along with her. She was thrilled and surprised to get acceptances from several schools that weren’t much farther down in rank but better yet, excellent fits for her learning style… good scholarship and financial aid to boot.

I know you are stressed but outside of perhaps retaking Geography, you need to let go the past and really focus on the present. Keep those grades up. Dig into your areas of interest. If you are smart and open to where you apply, you’ll get into a great school for you!

It’s never too late to improve - and if you’re going to mess up, freshman year is the time to do so. Try to have a great junior year and play the “upward trend” card.

I would say to look at this thread, it pretty much covers an upward trend and the schools you can get into with it. You seem to be on the exact track.

Long story short, you can get into plenty of great schools if you keep getting better. You didn’t screw up. Just keep going!
