Scripps 2022 RD Applicants

D accepted to Scripps. We (her parents) are super excited but she has nerves and concerns regarding dreaded acceptance rate anxiety etc. I will be checking in with all possible resources to try to get D’s questions answered but thought I’d ask here for benefit of undecideds like her. Do you have suggestions for resources to ask ‘stupid’ and ‘embarrassing’ questions as well as reasonable ones? Not comfortable asking them in online forum. Thank you for any ideas shared and good wishes for everyone during this exciting and nerve racking time.

Congratulations to your D for being accepted to Scripps. My D is finishing her freshman year and loves it there. If you have any questions you can PM me and I would be happy to share our experience. It’s a very exciting time and your D should be proud of her accomplishments!

@globalMoves - My D graduated last May…feel free to PM me. I’ll try to answer what I can.

Any recent experience with Keck Science dept? My D is super excited about Scripps, and I’m thrilled it’s such a great option. I read in another thread that Keck is pretty over-subscribed these days and hard to get some classes? She’s bio major, so I’m curious. If Keck is overloaded, are students taking science classes at Mudd and Pomona? Tks for any insights!

@AlmostThere2018 - My D was a physics major and loved it there. It’s probably different for physics majors than bio, but she never had a problem getting a physics class–in fact when she wanted to overload and take 5 classes, it was the physics class she would wait to sign up for since she knew she’d have no problem getting in. (Scripps only allows you to sign up for 4 classes at your initial registration time, then after everyone has registered you can go back and sign up for another or make changes).

She also had very personal relationships with her physics professors. They really helped and advocated for their students. She always talks so highly about them, and one found her a research opportunity at another college that she loved.

@globalMoves , feel free to PM me with questions. My D is a first-year who has communicated both positives and negatives about her experience, so hopefully I have a balanced perspective, insofar as a parent of a single student can

Any parents of humanities majors at Scripps? I’d love to ask you a few questions. Please PM me! (For some reason I’m unable to initiate PMs on CC.)

@textbooked -You have to have a minimum number of posts before you can initiate a PM. I think it’s 15 posts.

@claremontmom Oh boy, time to get busy! Thanks for the tip.

Yeah! I was accepted.
However, now, I’m really scared that they’d rescind b/c I usually get only one B per semester (like it’s literally been the case until senior year) → Now, I have like all B’s except for LA (last semester was pretty bad as well → A in LA & Econ but B’s in stats, physics, and french)
Reasons why my other classes are B’s
AP physics - mechanics → I really, really don’t understand why get certain test questions, and tests are like weighed 45% (I get low B averages on tests). My other stuff is like all in the A range.
AP stats → I had never needed to study for math tests until now, so this is a bit new (so much vocab!). Last semester was horrible b/c I never adjusted to it + I was late a lot (it’s 1st period, and I constantly do bad at 7:30). I’m getting better test scores though.
AP Gov - a little bit of senioritis, I don’t like doing the reading and good notes.
AP French - my worst subject, in my opinion, but I still have like a 88ish% → I can’t say anything right & the new teacher this year is much more discussion-based, but very nice…

Do you think Scripps would rescind their offer if I get more B’s than A’s but no C’s?

Thanks in advance to whoever responds :expressionless:

Super stoked D got accepted!
We were worried about her GPA as it’s a little low at 3.75 UW (school does not weight classes, A- is a 3.66) But she only took honors courses, AP Spanish and AP Calc. BC as a Sophomore. 1520 / 35
Now we just need to figure out where to find the funds to pay for tuition.

@WorriedNow101 , I have never heard of any college rescinding for B’s. Just push through the rest of the year and don’t worry.

I’m looking for the revisit day for admitted students. Thanks.

No sure how to PM. Any other way you could give us a general idea?

Any idea when the wait-list pulls might come? My D is accepted at Smith with merit $ and I expect will go there, but Scripps is comparable to her. However, she has to tell Smith by May 1st (I think) and presumably wait-list pulls will come after Scripps count the class on May 1st. How does this typically work? Options I see:

  • Turn down Scripps, accept Smith, as the dates don’t align.
  • Tell Smith yes/pay deposit, revisit both Smith/Scripps to decide, turn down Smith late if Scripps pulls her from waitlist and Scripps is preferred.

Is the later option doable/ethical/normal? Or is she out of luck?

I think Smith is her first choice anyway, so it may be a moot point, but I’m curious how it works.

This is my first rodeo but I think she’d have to pay deposit at Smith and then if your D is pulled from WL at Scripps and accepts the spot then you withdraw from Smith and lose the deposit. They then presumably fill from their WL to fill the spot your D. vacated. I think this shuffling typically goes on for a couple months – even up to August.

@paraparent - yes, most likely waitlist offers will not come until after May 1st. And yes, it is normal and expected to commit to your top choice among the schools you’re accepted to, and to let them know if you later decide to accept a waitlist offer elsewhere. It’s not unethical - schools understand, since they’re expecting the students they pull from their waitlist to do the same thing! You just have to want the other school enough to forfeit your deposit (though in your D’s case, walking away from the merit money is probably a bigger deal than the deposit!). Congrats to your D on the merit offer at Smith!

If you want to waitlist, you accept the waitlist position. But you also put your deposit at another school. If you get off the waitlist (before or after May 1st), you decline at the first school and put your deposit at the waitlist school.

Most likely, you will lose your deposit at the first school. It’s possible, I suppose, that if it’s before May 1st you could get it back. (You could also wait until May 1st to pay it. )

Good news for a lot of people! The admissions statistics were just released and Scripps admitted way less people this year: 252 people so only 9% of applicants! From the looks of it, they will be drawing very heavily from the wait list. So don’t give up hope if you were wait listed and for those of you who did get in, that’s a huge achievement http://www.scrippscollege.edu/news/class-of-2018

@adaserk One clarification: they are aiming for an entering class is 252. That’s not the number they have accepted. Big difference.
