SDSU Transfer Decisions Thread Fall 2017

@Orlando1997 (oops, I thought this was for UCSB. But I’m sorry to hear that. :c it’s been so competitive this year…)

Ok everybody, here it goes… After putting it all together I’m pretty sure I know how this crazy, yet very simple system works. First of all, my stats…

Major: Psychology
GPA: 3.2
AA-T/AS-T?: Yes
Pre-reqs: Completed
Golden 4: Done
SD Area?: No, Orange County (Based on 100% local status, only 30% local)

ACCEPTED!!! crazy right? actually not so much.

To try and answer some of your questions and to prepare future applicants that come across this site, let me explain.
I completed most of my general Ed at Santa Ana College in Orange County (non-SDSU local) before transferring to Grossmont College in SD. There, I completed 31 units mostly Major prep. and graduated with an ADT in Psychology. For all who think they get a .1 boost in your GPA, if that’s true, it would be because the CC you transfer from does not offer enough major prep. courses that they hook up a boost to compete. I will explain more later. You all can find individual major prep courses at assist dot org by typing in your transferring from and intended to transfer schools and you will see what is offered at your CC. Look at your local University, then look at SDSU.

For Psych majors, SDSU requires you complete all or most of these:
Psychology 101, 201, 211, 230, 260, 280, and Biology 100

What an ADT does is that it requires you to complete some extra major prep. courses, usually 3-5 more.
Psych ADT requires:
Psychology 101, 120, 205, 215, 140, 138, 150, and 170.

Therefore an ADT forces you to take the mandatory classes needed to transfer to your local University.
Based on the community college your graduate from with your ADT, SDSU or and University will know exactly which classes you were offered and how similar they are.
The ADT essentially is the University’s secret tool to know exactly how similar the courses you took for your ADT are to their courses offered and if you will need to retake any.
If courses offered at a CC are nothing like SDSU’s or not offered at all, I assume they may give a .1 GPA boost but I don’t see any other reason a boost would make sense and not be unfair to Naturally-high GPA earners.

At Grossmont I completed all identical classes offered at SDSU:
Psychology 101, 120, 205, 215, 140, 138, 150, 170, 201, 220
plus Biology 239, 249 (at Santa Ana College)

As you can see it makes perfect sense that I was accepted since I am now 1/3 done with my Bachelors degree with all the classes I took. I only need 53 Units to graduate with a Bachelor’s in Psychology, minor in communication and minor in counseling. I literally am almost done.

What a University’s main goal is to accept students that have either completed some, most and all very similar classes to the ones offered at their school. They are also looking for applicants with high GPA and potential.
If a student is non-local and the prep courses are not similar to SDSU’s, like they are at your local University, they may consider you if you have a high GPA or show promise of being a successful student at their school. So for those non-locals who were accepted, it is most likely because you have done some extra in terms of major prep, GPA, etc.
There is absolutely no random drawing for acceptances or whatever people were saying. That’s just silly.

Having said that, it only explains the academic portion of this system. Now, you have to figure out how my people the University accepts on average every year, in YOUR MAJOR. Each major has vastly different amounts of people being accepted and if you search Analytic Studies & Institutional Research-Applicants by major SDSU, you can see all that info. To be honest, I got lucky because hundreds of people get accepted, but thousands apply. In other majors, 10-80 may apply, and 3-30 might get accepted. Time to do your own research.

Now you can put it all together and have a better idea of if and why you are/will be accepted or denied
I hope this came out as clear as I can think it. I’m sure I forgot some minor details but I’ll add if I remember. It makes perfect sense to me lol, but I’m always open to disagreements or thoughts. I cannot promise to respond right away, I work a lot. Feel free to message me if you want for more detailed information or website names, etc.

I’m Paul, See all you Psych majors at State.

BTW, I only added course numbers on the last post for all my completed and required courses, but on the assist website you can see how similar the names are for each college. Like I mentioned before, the names of the courses are Identical (course numbers are just different, but plentiful).

And 1 last thing… Our supplemental application gives the University precise information regarding, GPA, ADT, Graduation school offering ADT (determines local or not, and course similarities), golden 4, as well as exactly which pre-reqs you completed. They will see which of their required courses you’ve finished.

@paulbob3 not crazy. Congrats!!!

Thanks, I’m pretty stoked.

@paulbob3 hey paul, what are you specializing in? I also got into SDSU for Psyc, but I chose an emphasis in I-O.

@itsromeosucka hi, that’s great Congrats. I didn’t specialize in anything, I just took all the Psych classes offered at Grossmont. I believe with the ADT you have to choose Applied Psych on the app. and I’m sure I could’ve chosen a specialization instead but I thought it would help me transfer.

@paulbob3 congratulations on admission!

While I think some parts of your explanation make sense, in other cases, I don’t believe it applies. Some of us were denied and our application date never changed from the date of application submission (in my case, Oct. 20). It was pretty apparent that they didn’t even open my application before denying my admission.

Again, congrats!

@jenxner Have you met all the requirements of your intended major?(i.e., minimum GPA, golden four and other things) I think that if the minimum requirements are not satisfied, the system might deny your application automatically.

Yes. I posted my stats in this thread earlier. @malpais The only thing against me is that I’m not local to SD (in SoCal though).

@jenxner hi, Sorry to hear you were denied. I am assuming you are referring to the Admission Status Date which you referred to as application date. I’m not quite sure why your admission status date wouldn’t change if they have changed your status to denied. It should say the date you got denied. Also we can’t be sure that simply looking at our supplemental app, will automatically change a status date when no status was changed. Being non-local doesn’t affect you as much as you think. The most important thing to the University is Completed pre-reqs. Below I copied and posted SDSU’s requirements for you major. Only you know how qualified you really are.

The foods and nutrition major is an impacted program. To be admitted to the foods and nutrition major, students must meet the following criteria: a. Complete the following courses (or their equivalents): Nutrition 201, 203, 205; Biology 100, 100L, 211, 211L, 212; Chemistry 100, 130, 160; Economics 201 (or Statistics 250); Exercise and Nutritional Sciences 200; Psychology 101; Sociology 101. A grade of C or higher must be earned in Chemistry 100 and 130. These courses cannot be taken for credit/no credit (Cr/NC); b. Have a cumulative GPA of 2.90 or higher.

Remember that there are non-locals with high GPA’s and more classes completed than the minimum requirement. Also, there are locals who have completed the EXACT classes required, not just some similar ones.
Finally, locals are offered ALL or MOST major reqs. Other CC’s may offer some of the requirements as may not even be similar enough to count.

If you did everything above (even some extra), with a high GPA you should have been at least waitlisted. Also remember that around 60-80 people are accepted each year in Foods and Nutrition.

Analytic Studies & Institutional Research-Applicants by major SDSU (search this title)

also @jenxner I forgot to add that my App Status stayed as Nov 22, until my acceptance last week on March 24. Now it says March 24, so if it helps any The exact same thing happened to me, that my date didn’t change until the day they made a decision. Either the date doesn’t change when opening the app, or they opened it on the day they made their decision.

Thanks for the insight, @paulbob3. I’m currently going through the appeals process, so at least I can be assured that someone will be seeing my application this time around.

I don’t want to deter this thread or rain on anyone’s parade. Again, congrats to those who are accepted.

For sure @jenxner I’m glad you filed an appeal. I did hear good things about appeals and that ALL who believe they are qualified SHOULD appeal and force them to take a good look at your app. Good Luck, hope you get in!

GPA: 4.0
AA-T: Yes
Prerequisites: Completed
SD Local: No
I found out two days ago and I’m still shocked.

same man, my gpa was a 3.9 and i see people with 3.3’s getting in

@moisesr94 Most people with lower GPA got in because they were local or had less impacted majors or less locals going for that major. I called and that’s what they said.

Admitted! (On 3/29/17)

Major: Economics
GPA: 2.9
AA-T/AS-T?: No
Pre-reqs: All completed but one
Golden 4: Will be done by Spring 2017
SD Area?: No, Chicago IL

Fairly surprised I got in. I think SDSU isn’t as strict with out of state students because they earn more $ off of their out of state tuition

@jmallard2 Congrats!! Exciting! I’m local and got Waitlisted, transferring back from an out of state 4 yr.hopefully I get in too, but won’t find out till bet may 1-15. You’re going to love SD
