I am a sophomore at a decent community in the Metro Detroit area. I will have my associates degree in Business in the fall and want to transfer to get my Bachelor’s degree in Marketing.
As of now I have a 3.0 GPA but I think after I finishing retaking some of my classes and finishing my credits I will finish with a 3.2-3.6 GPA. My high school ACT score was 28.
I am currently in the Metro Detroit area so I can either commute to UM Ann Arbor (don’t think I would be accepted) or Dearborn, as well as Wayne State or Eastern. I would save money by living at home, although a UM graduate argued that commuting to Ann Arbor wouldn’t be feasible.
Alternatively I could live on campus at MSU, Western, Central or another University.
I wouldn’t want to spend more than ~$30,000 a year total (I’m just assuming no financial aid even though I will apply). I’m not sure if going away to one of the other schools I mentioned would be worth the extra $10000-$20000 per year.
Interested to hear some opinions about the different schools in MI and what my chances of acceptance would be at Ross and Broad Colleges.
Thanks.
@romanigypsyeyes is one of our MI experts. She may have useful ideas for you.
Have you spoken with the Transfer Advisor at your CC? That person’s whole job is to help students find the best transfer options.
I spoke to my advisor (not specifically transfer) at my CC about UM Ann Arbor specifically and they said they weren’t sure how strong of a candidate I was. They told me to visit an open house in May where they could look over my transcripts and measure if I was a good fit. My advisor also mentioned that in the past very few students transferred to Ross but recently UM had sent over someone to recruit students from our CC.
As far as choosing colleges my advisor didn’t really tell me which schools were “better” or “worse” and said it’s up to me as far as my preference with campus, cost etc.
I’m mainly trying to get a feel for how the different business schools in Michigan conpare (not sure if there are any to avoid) and what their strengths/weaknesses are.
For example, I have no idea how Western, Central, Eastern and UM Dearborn rank. Dearborn would be the most affordable for me, but I have no idea if any of those schools or have better programs.
Sorry if these responses are hard to read, I’ve been typing all of this on my phone, as well as copying and pasting sections.
Any and all input is appreciated.
Where abouts do you live? I live in Metro Detroit in the Livonia/Plymouth/Northville area and have been commuting for several years. Commuting sucks but it’s doable.
If your budget is 30k a year, assuming you’re a resident you’ll be able to afford any of the schools. So it’s really a matter of where you can get into and where you want to go.
Ross is almost certainly out of reach.
Have you looked into the programs at EMU, WS, and UM-Dearborn?
I live in the same general area as a resident. I agree most of the information I’ve read makes it sounds like getting into Ross is even harder than I imagined. I read a few online anecdotes of students at fairly prestigious colleges with strong academics turned away from Ross. That makes me wonder why they would even bother to send someone.
I haven’t looked in detail at the programs at the different schools. Checking online it seems like there aren’t a ton of distinguishing qualities, all seem to have a similar message of preparing students for a rewarding career.
Are there any sources you would recommend for evaluating the different schools in a more “objective” sense? I’ve been to a few and the basic message is “we offer a great experience for the cost/academic level”.
The most convenient and seemingly cost effective option is UM Dearborn, but if you felt another school would better prepare me for the business world I’d be willing to pay more to live on campus at a different school.
Thank you.
