Searching for Urban Engineering/Music

My son is a jr. at a public high school and an urban magnet math and science academy. He looked at UPitt, Ohio State, Case, Rutgers and Purdue. He liked all but Purdue, and Case might not be 'urban' enough.
He's interested in Materials Science or Chemical. He is also a tuba player, and wants to continue--possible marching, but definitely symphonic band.

He'll take the SAT's in May-so no scores yet.

We've done lots of research, but I'm wondering if we've missed some others.

He'd like to leave New England.

Any suggestions?
Thanks as this is my first post.

Perhaps Carnegie Mellon? But if Case is not "urban" enough, I'm not sure he'd like Pittsburgh any better.

CMU is a great engineering school, and is probably urban enough, but your son should visit to see. But that's a good suggestion.

Another one would be USC; vey urban (and safe despite what you may read - I went there for chemical engineering and my son is there now, also in engineering). And at USC there is at least a chance that your son could get into the USC band which provides enormous social benefits (the band is very significant at USC because of the rominent position of the football team in college life). And the Viterbi School is a very good engineering school, and has a rising reputation.

My DW (dear wife) is a materials engineer and she suggests some more schools with good engineering reputation (but alas, no knowledge of the Tuba situation);Illinois Institute of Technology; Rutgers; University of Illinois, and she thinks Michigan as well.

I'd possibly add Northwestern and WashU in St. Louis. If he liked UPitt, he may very well like at least the urban aspect of CMU as they are literally right next to each other. In my experiences with the two schools, CMU definitely has a different social atmosphere than UPitt, so he should definitely visit.

Not sure how much you heard about music opportunities during your visit at Case - I'm an engineering student about to graduate from Case. I've been really happy with the band programs here, which are open to students of all majors and proficiencies. Let me know if you had any specific questions about the school - I'd be happy to answer.

kids who look at CMU and Case Western, often look at the U of Rochester too. Rochester is also affiliated with the Eastman School of Music- so depending on his music proficiency, he may be able to take advantage of that too.
School is on outskirts of city of Rochester- but definitely accessible.

hmmm

Great Engineering, in a large city with a great Marching Band

USC in Los Angeles

Look into Vanderbilt, good engineering and Blair conservatory. Nashville is Music City!

Check out Rice.

I'm not sure why this student thinks Case isn't "urban" enough. It's right in the city.

Schools with marching bands usually have good football teams...so think football.

Any large flagship U is going to have a good marching band. How about Ohio State or U of Wisconsin or U of Minnesota?

Ohio State is a great choice. Wonderful marching band, great opportunities for music (tuba's are a big thing at OSU). Great engineering school, I was very impressed with their MatSci and Chem E departments. I was told at an engineering day that Chem E is a 5 year program, they were very honest that you probably would not be able to get through in 4 years. It's very uban and has a urban feel (much different than Purdue). It looks like he looked at OSU.

Good music opportunities also at Michigan and Michigan State. Engineering dept is higher ranked at UM but very tough from what I have heard.

I know that he wants out of New England but Lehigh came to mind. Good engineering, have a MatSci and Chem E department. Not very many music majors (but a music department) many, many opportunities for participation.

I immediately thought of the UW Marching band. Large school, don't need outside city to have plenty to do. Still remember the many marching sousaphones at football games. Very competitve band, though...

Not New England...but U of Maryland College Park would also be a great choice.

I would recommend UC Berekley.. big urban city, culture of bay area, and excellent support for the classic arts

Look at the University of Cincinnati...top music program (CCM), band,[url=http://www.eng.uc.edu/dept_cme/]engineering[/url</a>] and an urban school.

Believe it or not, the world's first material science program started at Northwestern. ;) The program has such a great reputation that there are more co-op job openings than majors to fill them.
