Hi all, I've accepted my offer of admissions and I'm going to Columbia this fall.

I have one concern though. When I was applying, I was unsure whether I should apply for SEAS or for CC. Because I had more math and science classes, I eventually chose to apply to SEAS with potential major as computer science. But now, I'm beginning to think that that was a mistake. I want to major in either East Asian Languages and Cultures or Political Science and that would be in CC, not SEAS.

I'm wondering how difficult is it to switch from SEAS to CC? Would it be possible to just email them and ask to switch or do I have to go through admissions process again? Thanks for your replies, in advance.

I've heard in other threads that you get tossed in with all the other transfer applicants to CC, and people have said that they don't give preferential treatment to SEAS students over those from other universities. Logically (no solid evidence), I'd imagine that the admissions officers would have a hard time rejecting you (especially if you get good grades your first term), especially if it means you might go somewhere else to study your preferred major. If you're bright enough to get in the first time, they probably want to keep you around for the long run. Then again, I'm not an admissions officer and I've been confounded by their practices several times already, so what do I know. Either way, good luck!

well, is it very difficult (in terms of work load and fitting schedules together) to do a concentration while being a CS major in SEAS? how about doing two concentrations, would that be impossible? Thanks for you reply kylejscholz, and a preemptive thanks to any people who may answer.

I actually had a similar dillemma as you expo, (although I eventually chose CC) and after asking around a bit, I heard from one SEAS graduate that he wanted to switch into a CC major after his first year, and the admissions office basically said, "Sure. But you have to start all over again." So, if you really really want to major in something not offered in SEAS, then I'd suggest trying to switch as soon as possible so you won't have too much catching up to do.

Yeah...I think basically this is the sort of thing you want to call someone up and ask about NOW, rather than a year or so in. The admissions office should be able to answer your question.

I'm in the same position as you; I want to switch from CC to SEAS but I will do more research before I contact the admissions office and ask them; because I'd have more freedom to do a premed concentraion as well as a minor in a language and music in CC than in SEAS (I've heard that engineers don't have a foreign language requirement because they have no space or time).
