I’m curious if anyone out there has considered SAD in their college decision-making.
My D recently submitted her first college app. She wants to stay close to home and has some special needs that probably make being nearby the best choice, but with the days so short lately and seeing her depression flare (as it has every year at this time since she was a young girl), I got to thinking if she might be better off in a place with a warmer, sunnier winter.
My D’s school offers free light therapy for SAD: https://www.purdue.edu/recwell/programs/wellnessPrograms/massageLight-therapy/lightTherapy/index.php
Wondering if that might be something to look into at the schools on your D’s list. I imagine Purdue isn’t the only place that offers it.
Lawrence University has SAD light rooms available, too.
In most universities, you can get a better dorm room for accommodation.
I apologize for being so late in replying to all of your responses. I appreciate them, and they are something for us to look at when D is making her final decisions, @momofsenior1 and @allyphoe .
@grizzlybear123 One has a freshman dorm area with buildings that are a few stories high and wooded. I don’t know how much sunlight they get. Maybe an upper floor would be better than a lower if she has her choice.
The other school on my D’s list has dorms in a tall building. Maybe the south side of the building would be beter.
I never thought about these things…but I bet her doctor would be willing to write a letter requesting accommodations that might help.
Thank you, all!
I’d never heard of SAD! I didn’t realize this existed! Contact the Disability Services department at the school. They should be able to help with accommodations. Good Luck!
