Second Bachelors

Hello. I have a plan I’d like some advice on.

I attended UNC at Chapel Hill and completed a Bachelors of Arts in Communication Studies. I am from Greenville, NC. I moved back home to Greenville. I am having trouble finding employment, and I want to pursue a degree in Computer Science.

The only realistic option I have is to attend ECU, here in my hometown, and attend for a second bachelors, but this time a BS in Computer Science.

I would be taking out student loans. I already have some student loans.

It is kind of a disappointment to “step down” from a more prestigious school to a less prestigious school. Should I try to find a “job to get by,” and work until some other doors open for me, or do you think this is an okay decision?

Any advice is recommended.

Have you looked into what amount you have remaining under the aggregate loan limit?

Have you confirmed they will allow pursuit of a second bachelors? Not all colleges will. If they do, hopefully you can apply some credits from your 1st degree.

Have you considered not pursuing a full degree, but taking some programming type classes and seeking work in IT? You may not need the full CS degree.

@madison85: no, how do I do that? intparent: yes, this school allows obtainment of a second bachelors. Most job descriptions say require “BS in Computer Science”. It may be possible to go into the programming world without a degree, but it seems like it will be a hard go.

I would transfer all general education credits, and then I would just take 2 years worth of major (comp science) classes.

Are you under age 24?

I am age 25. Also, I could apply to a masters in software engineering, and take some undergrad courses as a grad student to get up to speed. however, i feel more comfortable with the second bachelors option, as i feel like i won’t miss out on any important theories.

Can you afford a second bachelors? What is your current loan balance?

Madison85,

My current loan balance is: $10,756
