Second Choice Major

I'm filling out the USC supplement for the common app. My first choice major is civil engineering. I am considering putting economics as my second choice. Is that wise? I was originally planning on putting another engineering major, but I figured if I didn't get into civil engineering, I probably wouldn't get into any of the majors offered by the engineering college. Is my logic flawed, or should I stick with a non-engineering second choice major? Thank you!

That may not be necessarily true. I am not sure how they admit, but if it is by department you may want to look into the competitiveness across departments. Some departments have MANY applicants, while others have much fewer, and may have a higher admittance rate.

If you don’t get to do what you want, why even go to the school?

I’d actually be fine with economics! I mean, honestly I’m only a senior in high school… I wish I could say I have everything figured out about what I want to do and who I want to be, but I only know so much about engineering! Both majors seem very interesting to me. My other option would be to stick with an engineering major, but I’m just unsure.

Chucktown- How would I figure that out? Would those statistics be on their website? Thank you!

I’m kinda taking advantage of this thread for my own benefit… haha but I was also thinking about doing something similar in my app to USC. My first choice being mechanical engineering… second choice business… Just because I’m still unsure as well. However, if you’re doing that still… are you also doing the supplement for the school of your second choice major? Like the business school supplement?
