Currently I am in my first semester at an accredited MFA program in Studio Art/Curatorial practices. I was admitted and immediately switched to this program after completing a BFA in the same. Half way through this semester I started realizing how much I do not want to be in an expensive private school for two more years (my loans are about to reach 90,000 in total) and would rather save about 50,000 extra and finish up my MFA at a state school later on. In the mean time I am interested in getting a Bachelors of Sciences, as I have always been interested in more than just art. I crunched the math and even with no scholarships what so ever I could get these two degrees for around 10,000-15,000 less than just getting the one MFA degree at my current school.
This sliding tuition scale all relies heavily on if I can start over at a junior college level and knock out the remaining courses I could get a cheaper rate before moving on to my BS. I assume I’m eligible for some of my BFA credits to transfer into the program.
I’m still not exactly sure how this works however, anyone who has done something similar please let me know
1.) my eligibility of starting at community college level
2.) the likelihood of the community college accepting some basic class transfers from a completed degree
3.) if it is more feasible to start at a university with the same credit transfer situation
I would love to know where you live, because that way I (and whoever else pops up in here) could probably be more helpful.
You have a BFA and went on to get a MFA.
The MFA costs a great deal, so you would like to go back to obtain a BS?
Am I getting that right?
If you have one BA, BS, BFA, whatever. If you have one bachelors degree of some sort. Then, you can totally earn another BA, BS, BFA or whatever, but you will not under any circumstance qualify for financial aid because there is an age old rule about that. I am not trying to be a mean lady, I am just speaking of a rule.
It is a free country. But, a Community College may not fool with you (Southern expression, no offense intended) because you have a BFA. You would need to read over the CC’s catalog because they might let you go as a transient student or something for all I should know. But, it would not be possible for you as near as I can reckon to earn an AA or AS or AAS at a Community College if you have a BFA.
I think that since you have the BFA, you should see if you could transfer over to a University for the BS, but you would totally have to pay out of pocket. Most Universities will work with one who desires a second Bachelor’s degree, but the mere fact that you already have a Bachelor’s degree would render you pretty near SOL for CC as near as I can reckon.
