Second Masters. Accounting, Macc, at 30

I am looking at getting a second Masters. I think I want to get into accounting but I am a non traditional applicant in every sense of the word. I have 12 years Military experience, an Undergrad in Crim Justice, and a MBA from Texas A&M-Commerce already. I am looking at the programs at IUPUI and Fairleigh Dickinson in NJ. Does anyone have any advice on why this is or isnt a good idea at my age/no accounting experience/having an MBA before a MACC?? Any advice is appreciated.

Depends on what focus your MBA was in. With what you have now, you might actually want to look into firms like KPMG who look for candidates with security clearance to work in their business services sector. I’m sure other firms have government contract work as well but I know KPMG really specializes in that segment.

If your focus for your MBA was not in accounting then you have some catching up to do for the MAcc with undergrad coursework, roughly five to six classes worth. Aside from that, depending on your state CPA requirements, you should have an additional load of business classes necessary to qualify for sitting to take the CPA.

I mention the CPA because most firms require you have one by your 3rd year otherwise known as your “senior” level in their segment, which would be the only reason for getting a masters is to be qualified to be a senior, manager, and so on. Being a CPA is really the bread and butter of the business where having the masters just qualifies you for the next step.

Check this out. It’s designed for guys like you.

Thanks for your service.

There are no prerequisite courses for the Masters Degree at Seton Hall or FDU. And, there are only 2 accounting prerequisites at IUPUI. So why in the world would I do a certificate program for the same amount of hours it will take me to get a masters.

Cost and convenience. You could also just do your two prereqs for IUPUI (great name for a school).

LSU allows for up to 10 classes, one year, to be taken through correspondence and the cost is like $320 a course. Not bad.

My schooling is free. I am a veteran and will make 2000 a month just to attend.

Oh, that’s fantastic. I didn’t realize that was the case. My best to you.

I asked my Father (aerospace executive) and he says MBA/CPA is always in high demand.
