I know it may be to no avail, but if any current or alumni of a boarding school want to share their experience with a secret society at their school as I for one, would love to hear more about this topic that not to many people know about.

When you say “secret society”, what ** exactly ** do you mean? Are referring to something like the Illuminati? haha

Not quite haha. I was talking about societies like the ones said to still be active at Andover which are TUB (Truth, Unity, Brotherhood) Or the female counterpart, MSAS (Madame Sarah Abbot Society).

Honestly, it sounds like a suburban, upper-class gang… IMO

And we can’t talk about them here, or they wouldn’t be “secret”. Just kidding.

Wow, what are these and how do I join one? Sounds so D.A.-ish Harry potter… but vandalism is a huge issue. How are they not caught- are there any security cameras?

Historically, fraternities and secret societies were formally banished/forbidden from PA a long time ago (first world war era? I forget; it was long, long before my time in the early '70’s; I remember that it was explicitly forbidden; it sounds like they added it to the Blue Book this time to make sure there could be no misunderstandings.).

By their very nature, secret societies are hard to eliminate completely. Maybe a current Andover student can comment; I’d expect the administration is more than slightly upset by this incident… And the vandalism should be dealt with if/when the perpetrators can be identified.

The campus is large: would you really want hundreds of cameras? That’s what it would take to cover the campus.

It also sounds like it could be a single or maybe just a couple of people; having a “smoke screen” of an organization is attractive to many.

Though the pranks that a friend and I did when we were there will remain unpublished, we made sure there was no damage or anyone hurt. I remember what we did got the administration all upset (justifiably so, I expect). But what we did wasn’t a “secret society”, any more than any two of you doing something you shouldn’t ;-).

Here’s a short little article on PA’s secret societies:

There are a few at Concord.

The ones at Andover are all pretty awesome. I only say that because they leave food out for people during finals week–MSAS leaves cupcakes, and TUB leaves an enormous bathtub of soda on the library terrace.

One other society, however, is not well-liked by both the administration and the student body. AUV, as it is called, boasts members like George W. Bush, and they’re known currently for spray-painting garbage cans around campus. Truly a wonderful addition to campus. /sarcasm

But honestly, no one really knows anything about the societies, and those who are in them don’t tell anyone.
