This summer, I am also going to Virginia to work on an archaeological dig with my Uncle! He is field director at Ferry Farms, George Washington’s Boyhood home!

***Was just selected to attend The Hague International Model United Nations. For those of you outside the MUN loop, this is the largest and most prestigious MUN conference for high school students, only 5 delegations from the US out of about 200 delegations from over 100 countries. So excited!

A few explanations:

Class Rank: Would be much higher but I've taken a lot of UW extra courses which severely lowered my GPA. Our Val takes like 5 courses in a 9per day, no extras. If only core academic classes figured in I would defiantly be in the top 5.

Course Load: Our school doesn't offer AP/IB. Instead, all of our upper level courses are dual enrollment through the local community college. I have or will have taken all available upper level courses except for Calculus (due to scheduling) and Spanish (because I take French). This means that when I graduate I will have about 8 or 9 college credits (if they transfer!). I have taken the most demanding course load possible. We have a nine period day and I have 8 credits a year plus a required gym (no sh or lunch period). I have taken all possible honors and lots of electives.

Essays: Should be great, I've already started working on a few!

Recs: Also should be great, I've had my principal write me a rec. before and he writes a really good one! Also, I have a very good relationship with all of my teachers.

I would love chances for:

University of Chicago (EA) (1st choice)
Georgetown SFS (EA)
Swarthmore College
Princeton University
Columbia University- CC
Tufts University
Johns Hopkins University
Vassar College
Oberlin College
Reed College
SUNY Geneseo
University of Rochester
American University

(NOTE: I will not apply to all of these schools so please don’t make fun!)

Thanks! :D

Anyone????

Obviously you are a very solid applicant.

American, SUNY, and to a lesser extent URoch(low match?) should be safeties.

Oberlin, Reed, and Vassar are very very reachable IMO, matches I would say; should be in if you can get acrosse why you fit in at each school.

Princeton, Columbia, and Georgetown SFS will be reaches. Tufts and JHU reaches, but less so. UChicago - you should have a very realistic shot there, or so I would think. But with any of these schools do not count on an admission letter, a counselor may have seen 8 Model UN kids right before your packet, and they might have had better stats. But you could get lucky and have a counselor remembering their time at Boy's State and want to bring you in. Factors that might be luck, chance, or fate do seem to come into play with these schools with microscopic admissions rates.

It took me so long to figure out what the HELL your thread title was (okay like a minute, I was looking for it to be a word or something) I am too worn out to see-aiche-ay-en-see-ee-es you ar-aye-gee-aiche-tee now.

Oh, if it makes a difference, I already had an interview at Chicago and I thought it went well.

Also, MUN won't be stressed on my app. In fact, the international Model UN I'm attending won't be until after app. season. I don't consider MUN my biggest EC, although, this international conference will take mega research/time. The ECs I will stress is being on the building planning team and getting an AP curriculum in our school (to late for my self, alas) and my leadership in student government.

Thanks for your input DSC! Anyone else?

Pee El Ee Aye Es Ee?

ivies=reject

laundry list ECs. i see no focus and little leadership (for ivies)

OK... Even though I'm president of student senate and all my ECs fit into either sports, Student Senate, MUN, Music/drama or other leadership stuff... I'm not in any random clubs here.

BTW, I know the Ivies are huge, ginormous reaches. But could somebody focus on Chicago or Swat. <<<Top Choices

good chances for uchicago and swat

one president is not enough leadership for ivies

Swat and UChicago aren't that much easier than lower ivies there firefox, if at all.

Cornell, Brown, Penn(not Wharton) /= HYP

not MUCH easier, but easier, yes

i don't understand DSC's second sentence. cornell brown penn are equal to HYP? i beg to differ

i still have no idea what this says

well... it doesn't say anything about my chances...

Firefox -

/= means not equal.

There is a large difference there, and I think that you seem to not notice that as you refer to the Ivies together.

This thread /= my chances

"all my ECs fit into either sports, Student Senate, MUN, Music/drama or other leadership stuff"

That is a LOT of stuff for ECs to fit into. I agree it's hard to find a clear passion/focus in your extracurriculars, and I think that might hurt you quite a bit.

Student senate, principal advisory counsel, peer leadership, Boy's State and building planning team are all very closely related, basically showing I'm a student leader in my school.

The whole sports thing is just kinda something to do, I don't consider them a big part of my life, should I even put them?

I used to be way more involved in music/drama than I am now, my extra curricular focus kinda changed early this year. I used to want to be a music major and took like 3 music classes a year. Now I just play French horn and am in school musicals and drama productions.

I guess MUN is kinda out there in relation to the others, but hey, can't a guy have fun! Also, I would like to major in IR.

If I had to limit that list to the 6 or so like on apps it would read like this:

-Student Senate (Treas. Soph. ,VP Junior, Pres. for Sr. year!.)
-MUN (selected to attend THIMUN)
-Building Planning team 11th (one of only two students selected to participate)
-French Horn in band (All county participant, A on NYSMA level 5 solo)
-Active in Church (lector, eucharistic minister, community service through church)
-Leads in school musicals

But then I don't get to mention other things I feel would help my application such as interning at the county legislature, or Boy's State. I guess I'll just omit sports b/c they don't mean much to me even though they show a different side of me.

I guess I just don't really have a passion for anything in particular /: What should I do?

Write a brilliant essay for Chicago and I expect you to get in. They're not as fussy about ECs as the Ivies.
Besides, people say that Boy's State is a great EC.
Being male, you have a big advantage at Vassar.
