I am currently a Freshman at C.W. Post Long Island University. I like this school for many reasons and would recommend it to many people, but it is not for me. I'm happy to talk to anyone considering it. Anyway, because of social circumstances (Rough break-up) and the location of the school (Isolated) I feel claustrophobic each day I live on campus. Commuting isn't an option because I live in NYC which is a good hour away and I don't have a car/license.

The fall semester is almost over. I am planning on Majoring in English and immediately entering a doctoral program after graduating with my BA in order to be a professor of English Literature.

What I do not want to do: Attend my current school for the spring semester.

I have missed the deadline for most schools to transfer for this coming spring term.

My options as I see it: Drop out for spring semester and reapply as a transfer student to a NYC school in the fall, probably Hunter and Eugene Lang at the New School.

What would I do spring semester instead of attending college?
1) Get a job at a book store
2) Save money for an apartment for attending a NYC school in the fall so I don't have to live at home
3) Apply for internships, specifically an independent Publishing house in Brooklyn that I like.
4) Possibly take non-matriculated classes at Hunter? Could I do that?

What would I do over the summer?
1) Continue working at the book store
2) Continue to save money for an apartment
3) Continue internship
4) Take summer classes at Hunter (Maybe NYU?)

What would I do in the Fall?
Apply to new schools and attend one of them.

Alternative to dropping spring semester:
Studying Abroad in Australia.
Link: Study Abroad Programs And International Studies - Australia Center | Global College
Courses:
-The People of Australia (3 credits)
-The Natural Environment of Australia (3 credits)
-Environmental Issues of Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific (3 credits)
-Sustainable Australia & the South Pacific: Concepts & Case Studies (3 credits)
-Supervised Field Work Project (3 credits)
-Junior Research Seminar (3 credits)
Link to Course Descriptions: Academic Program | Global College | LIU

Benefits to studying abroad:
-Potentially much happier situation
-Living in a small house on the beach, Real World TV Show style
-Living situation is co-educational
-Unrestricted lifestyle: No curfew, attend classes, rest of the day is yours.
-Life experience of living and studying abroad and learning about Australian culture in a hands-on and practical way
-It is a Long Island University program, meaning the credits are not third party, they are normal LIU credits like the normal Poli Sci class I am taking later today.
-Slightly cheaper than paying for a normal spring semester here
-Courses seem interesting

Negatives to studying abroad:
-Potentially unhappy situation--Small group of students attend program (What if there are no cute girls?)
-I would still enjoy living in a beach house in Australia. I like reading. I like travel.
-The names of the courses are vague and obscure. I am definitely transferring, so how would these credits come with me? Would schools like Hunter and Eugene Lang take these credits? If they did it would be as electives or sociology or environmental activism or something. I intend on majoring in English, the benefit would be minimal even if they DID take these credits, right?
-I may dual major or minor in something else, probably sociology or political science.
-If the credits don't transfer, it is a waste of $40,000.
-This is the main problem.

OVERALL Main Questions:

***-If I drop spring semester, would I have issues applying to other schools in the Fall?

-Possibly because I would be applying for the Freshman fall term having already completed a Freshman fall term?

-Is the study abroad program a bad idea since I will have to try and transfer those credits to a new school?

-Will summer courses make up for missing spring semester?

-Does my plan for spring and summer seem sound?

-What should I do? Please take into account that I really, really do not want to attend Spring semester here.

Also take into account that while I have a good GPA for this fall semester (3.5) my high school GPA is abhorrent (2.3ish) so getting into Hunter and Lang is not guaranteed, especially because one good semester in College may not be enough to make up for four years of poor work ethic in High School. My SAT score is at 1620.

Any insight, opinions, questions, answers you have to address anything and everything I have posted will help me immensely.

I sincerely thank you in advance!
