Seeking Opinions of The Gunnery

Hi, my son was accepted at The Gunnery and we really liked our visit. But it's hard to evaluate a school on just two hours. I don't know anybody who went there so I'm seeking your all's experiences and opinions.

My son is not academically strong but is bright and ambitious, is ADD/inattentive, great athlete, strong musician, socially popular and a nice guy.

My worry is that Gunnery might produce arrogant preps without the academic achievement to back it up (and in his case, not the financial background of many either!)

What do insiders know? Thanks so much for any ideas.

Hi marleyali66-

Our visit at The Gunnery was the best experience out of the 15 (yes, 15) schools that we visited. We have also been in contact with our student guides, teachers and admissions after the visit and everyone has been very helpful, informative and willing to help us however they can. We haven’t had that experience with many of the schools that we visited.

My daughter also has a special academic situation. Different from your son’s, but still a major consideration in our search. The Gunnery was the ONLY school that was willing to take the time to go through their offerings and standard protocol with us to make sure that she would be successful in their environment. I have no doubt that her needs will be met there WITHOUT her being singled out and made to feel different. She is very strong academically, but needs some things presented to her in a different way and they are completely on board. I find that comforting since I have been struggling for years to get my local school on board.

We are going to the April 1 Re-Visit Day and I am hoping that I’m still as impressed with the school then as I am now. We do not have the financial resources that a lot of the students there have and it will be a struggle for us to have her attend, but it she and I both feel that it is the best fit for her.

Hi there, my daughter was accepted to the Gunnery and was delighted, although she has not made her final decision yet. We loved the school and the admissions person we worked with was great. Actually, we went there thinking it would be a practice interview, instead we fell in love with the place. I have been told that the new head of school, Peter Becker, plans to beef up the curriculum and update some of the facilities. Not surprising, since he came from Lawrenceville School. In a few years, I believe the Gunnery admissions will be far more selective than they are now… the same way that Berkshire School became much more desirable/selective following the changes in the campus and curriculum under the leadership of Mike Maher.
