Hey if anyone out there has any experience with this, which safety schools of yours turned out not to be safety schools at all? Which safeties rejected you?

I saw an article, can't remember the name, about how safety schools reject applicants that are overly qualified because they know that the applicant is applying as a safety. Im not sure if the article had evidence or was speculative.

Thanks for posting! =)

Some private universities do have a reputation for not accepting students who they believe are using them as "safeties" because they figure those applicants aren't seriously interested in attending even if it is the only school that admits them. They know from experience that many of those applicants will ultimately choose to take a year off or to attend a home state public u instead. Here is my advice on safeties:

You need one rock-solid true safety. That is a school (probably your home state public u, or a local community college) that is obligated to admit you based on your statistics alone (and many state us do publish the grades/test scores that guarantee admission), and that you can pay for without any financial aid other than federally determined aid. Find this school, and develop a certain passing affection for it. Remember, it is your back-up in case everything else goes sour.

Then, concentrate on finding a nice selection of colleges/universities with programs that interest you and that are reasonable matches and plausible reaches for you.

Wishing you all the best.
