Seems that colleges are enrolling more Black Immigrants than Black Americans

Article from the Washington Post a few months ago:
<a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/03/05/AR2007030501296.html?referrer=emailarticle%5B/url%5D">http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/03/05/AR2007030501296.html?referrer=emailarticle</a></p>

I wanted to bring up this topic after reading the featured article on Hispanic enrollment. As a Nigerian immigrant attending Cornell University I found this article interesting. At my school it does seem as if most of the Black students are children of immigrants than from Black American families. The article, if you read it, gives some reasoning to why this is so, but I wanted to know what some other people thought of it.

bumping....

i agree... my dad said there are alot of nigerians in some good schools like WUSTL.... i too am a child of an immigrant from nigeria.

but when it comes to sports... i still think black americans are getting more enrollment for that.

i don't think it's fair to say this is because immigrants have a tendency to be "nicer" than black people, as said in the article. It is also not fair to assume that we have it easier when succeeding because we come from wealthy backgrounds in our respective native countries. It is hard to be an immigrant in America and certainly not every immigrant is rich, only a few are. To be a poor immigrant and be black in America, that's hard

in history class this past year i remember watching a film titled "Lost Boys of Sudan". It chronicled the lives of some Darfur refugees who were sponsored to come to America and get a college degree. One memorable part for me was when one of the refugees didn't want to leave his wallet because he said "black people in america will steal from you".

sometimes it is reverse... i've seen black americans redicule black africans..because of the way they look, they speak, their name, and their intellectual abilities.

whatisinaname..... the "nicer" thing is true... have u been to a middle school or a highschool composed mainly of black americans???? they are very mean, especially to all the other races. they raise their voices for nothing, always wanting to start a fight, and they pick on ppl ruthlessly.

yea i grew up in B-more in the black neighborhoods and I attribute the behavior of most of the black kids I was around to their upbringing. Many of them come from poor single family homes where the parents main concern is not their children. They are taught and grow up learning to only "worry about theirs" its how they survive. I don't believe a person's attitude can be detected in their application anyway. I do agree with the article when it says that many immigrant children have parents who did go to college. Nigerian parents I know value education above all. So I guess we have more motivation to go to college and apply more than Black Americans. I also heard that the highest performing minority in the United States is Africans

do u think cornell is difficult or easy? what is ur major?

my majors are Govt/Econ it is not easy, but it depends on who u r with difficulty I find it more difficult than my high school but doable when i try

That is untrue. The highest performing immigrant community is either Korea or Chinese.

Oooh.... I'm a mean "black immigrant".

no since they do not consider African immigrants a minority they are instead clumped in the African/African American/Black category, they do not have their own even though Black immigrants and Black Americans are very different. That's why you only hear about Asians

Well my parents are from Nigeria and moved here about 17 years ago and the way the article talks about "wealthy africans" is IMO incorrect because although ithe article speaks in general neither of my parents were rich when they came here. The value of education might however be right because my dad talks about the rigor of his highschool in Nigeria and how more than half of his school went off to foreign countries to study medicine. Proof of the value of education is that both of my parents are doctors and all other nigerian parents I know are either doctors (3), physicist, or something else with science (my dad says the GOOD students only studied science in his school). Their children aren't too bad either. I don't know any 1st generation nigerian child that makes less than all As and I know one that became the valedictorian of her school. So

"I also heard that the highest performing minority in the United States is Africans"

might actually be true but more in a subjective sense because I think everyone on CC can attest to the fact that most other countries outside of the U.S., have citizens with a higher respect for education than most U.S. Citizens.

Also I don't think it's right to stigmatize african americans (not african immigrants) who live in certain neighborhoods as people with bad attitudes and bad uprbringings because I know many african americans who are just the opposite. Infact a potential valedictorian (african american) of my school has a brother who is a rocket scientist (aerospace engineer) LOL.

i cosign you MJ582 if you don't mind

I don't know how many times my parents drilled that into my head -math and science are the only subjects they really care about.

The "only way" that I "can have a future in America" is if I join the medical feild.

over and over and over again

To whatisinaname: What does cosign mean? Does that mean you agree?

oh it means I agree and repeat what you said, like signing a contract as partners

bump......

People may get angry about what I am about to say, but I feel it needs to be said and I feel that I have a good explanation about this situation. I am the son of an African immigrant father and a Trinidadian immigrant mother, and this situation has been bothering me as of late.

I will refer to black-american as blacks that have been here for generations and african-americans as blacks that have parents that are immigrants or are immigrants themselves.

I feel that the reason why top schools are doing this is because it is the only way to maintain ivy league standards while at the same time having a diverse student population. It would be extremely hard to have a 90% or above rate of black-americans in all the top schools without significantly lowering the standards more than they have already been lowered. There just doesn't seem to be that many high achieving black-americans to have significant numbers in the top schools or for them all to be black-americans. To me this is very obvious even in my own life.

My school has always been diverse with a good mix of asians, whites, hispanics, and black/african-americans. It is so sad how the black-americans act I have become disgusted with them. There are NO smart black-americans in my school at all. They are all dumb, get bad test scores, bad grades, are loud and obnoxious, and just all around have an uneducated manner about them. They are always the loudest at assemblies and always the rudest in class. Ask the dumbest questions, and are always caught cheating or stealing something.

The smartest people in our school are the whites, asians(mostly koreans), and african-americans. The top 10 students or top 10% in our school over the years has always consisted of this mix. Even one of my best friends who is an African-American has done the "worst" out of his family gpa wise and he has a 3.7 the rest of his sisters have 4.0s and 3.9s with his eldest sister being salutatorian a couple years back. And to my knowledge a black-american has NEVER broken into these ranks. While they may be fun to hang out with, that is all they are good for because even too much contact with them and it will feel that your intelligence is being sapped from your mind. Most of the time they can't even speak proper english let alone have the standards to be admitted to an ivy league school with "fo sho this", and "where dat is", and "who he is". How they speak reeks of ignorance. And the only thing they can talk about are shoes, cars, and rap. I have NEVER IN MY LIFE had a deep conversation with a black-american, while I can do it regularly with my white, asian, and african-amercian friends.

I also feel that whether they want to admit it or not there is an elitist attitude among the ivy league, and they might feel that it is better to admit an african-american that usually has accomplished a lot more anyway than their black-american counterparts because of the stigma being black-american carries today. Even among the african community many can't stand black-americans. Many regard them as simpletons that give the rest of us black people a bad name and as people that can't think past their last drug sale or ho they slapped. Even my father HATES black-americans.

My father regularly tells me this: ** I don't care if you marry a white girl, an asian girl, or a hispanic girl, or african-amercian girl, but NEVER bring no black-american girl named Laquanda that's always shaking her head, can barely speak proper english, has no education past high school and is loud and rude, because I will never accept her, I don't care how much you love her." ** There is a general disdain among african-americans especially because of how black-americans make us look. My before mentioned friends father has two Phds and has written several books and his mother is also very educated, my father has a masters in biology and my mother is also very educated. And they all speak perfect english with little to no accent. Yet despite this white people will talk down to them as if they are idiots and don't know what they are talking about. While this angers our parents, they more blame black-americans than white people because if you are being spoon fed a somewhat well founded image of ignorance of black people daily, you can't help but feel that those people are ignorant.

I don't see this practice being stopped by the ivy league any time soon and I in fact see it increasing greatly in the future. Because with affirmative-action under such hot debate and its most probable outlawing in the U.S in the future. The only way to have a high amount of black students while still keeping the standards the same is to accept more immigrants and and african-american kids.
