@nottelling …saw LaLa today. I feel exactly as you did. Charmed was a great word, and I was in that mood. I liked it, didn’t Love it. However, I do love California and would like to go back, so I thoroughly enjoy he scenery. I think that was my favorite part. I’d give it a 7.5 to 8. The ending was my favorite part. DH loved it. I have to say I’m so glad I saw it on the big screen! Next up…Hidden Figures.
We watched Back to the Future Part 2 last night. It was released in 1989 but is timely today.
We watched La La Land with my DD when it only opened. Loved everything about it and found the ending to be perfect. As LA residents all the places they were filming looked familiar, the struggle of actors trying to make it are very well known in this city with every restaurant waitress being an aspiring actress. If the main characters ended up together, the movie plot would be too simple.
We really wanted to see s movie on Tuesday but were all collective too pooped to go. Want to see Moana and Hiddenn Figures. Maybe Lala Land later.
Last night, saw Princess Bride and Fluffy–comedian while waiting for traffic to subside. A 24" water main broke and is causing MAJOR traffic disruption. We were stuck at the mall after inching our way there in gridlock–45 minutes to go several hundred feet. We walked to my brother’s home (leaving car at mall) and hung out while waiting for congestion to ease about 10:30 pm. The main broke 4:30am and it may still be causing congestion thru Monday! Fortunately no injuries were reported.
Hidden Figures was exceptional!
The Oscar nominees are out! Glad to see “Hell or High Water” get a nomination…

Why is Dev Patel in the supporting role category for Lion? Wasn’t he the lead?
Because the Weinsteins are unmatched as Oscars-gamers, and they calculated that Patel didn’t have a shot in the Best Actor category but that Best Supporting Actor was more wide open. He’s onscreen for only about half the picture. The boy who plays him at age 4-5 is the real star of the movie, anyway.
How I Got Into College (1989)
Anthony Edwards, Corey Parker, Lara Flynn Boyle
Late to the party here, but I adored La La Land & I’m glad to see its 14 Oscar nominations. So glad to watch a joyful movie for once. I had read so much on the making of the movie with the actors repeatedly performing the long dance sequences in one take and the choreography by Mandy Moore & it was worth it.
Highly recommend seeing it on the big screen so you can take in the sunset the filmmakers worked so hard to capture perfectly and all the other wonderful colors and scenes throughout caught in Cinemascope.

I can ask the same question about Viola Davis in Fences
DH and I took ourselves out of the nasty rainstorm and went to see Hidden Figures which i strongly recommend. As it is a true story about three remarkable women. like Loving it takes you back to a different time and place in our history one that you might think practically unimaginable bu sadly true. I found it very inspiring.
Haven’t seen Lion yet so can’t weigh in on Dev Patel’s role but in Fences even though Viola Davis is the only actress she clearly supports Denzel who is the central character. Before the Golden Globes I questioned that also but it does make sense. Even though I thought all the performances in Hidden Figures were outstanding, I don’t know that Octavia Spencer was so amazing that she would be nominated over Janell Monae especially if Taraji Henson was not nominated for best actress. I thought both Kevin Costner, Jim Parsons and Marshihala Ali gave fine performances also.
Just saw Manchester by the Sea. Man, that one scene… and that other scene… so good.
They put up Dev Patel for supporting role because they thought he’d have a better shot there. There’s less competition. Also, from what I hear, he doesn’t appear until an hour into the movie so it makes some sort of sense.
@rebeccar My major water works were the “talking in the street” scene. (being intentionally cryptic for those who haven’t seen the movie yet.) =((
Haha yes, that was one of the two! Incredible acting from both of them, that’s when it really hit me how much that event shaped him (also being vague to avoid spoilers). The other that I was thinking of was the last thing that happened in the police station.
I noticed that Lin-Manuel Miranda’s song from Moana was nominated for best song. I hope he wins. Poor fellow, he has so few awards.

CC needs a button for laughing in agreement.
Someone mentioned ethnic diversity in casting. Would La La Land be an example of what people are complaining about – a mostly white cast for a show set in a city that is only 30% white? Then again, if it mainly depicts the movie industry, perhaps it is accurate, but in a way that highlights the criticisms…
I think what is being argued is that some of the best performances out there right now aren’t The leads in LaLa land. They are from Moonlight, Fences, Hidden Figures…yetLaLa is winning all these awards, and many feel it is lightweight. Honestly, the two can’t even sing and dance.
I’m rooting for Miranda so he can nab the first MacPEGOT (he would be the first, wouldn’t he?)
