Seen any good movies lately?

If she’s referring to the “sex” in the scenes between the shy porno film stand-ins, I’d say those scenes are rather relevant (and funny) as faking sex and talking about the prime minister while the lighting techs set up for a scene is what brings them together…actually.

There is a scene of another shy couple making out on a bed with breasts briefly shown, but there is no graphic or gratuitous sex in the movie, IMO. I find it terribly sweet, and we watch it every year. It’s worth it just to watch Hugh Grant dance to “Jump.”

Actually, it’s worth it just to watch Hugh Grant…

I’m not sure what scenes she’s talking about as I typed what she said and that was it. I saw no reason to keep it on our queue when she hated it.

At some point when H and I are alone it might make it to the top of ours.

Meanwhile, we have others we can watch. Inception is next I think for movies. In general we’re streaming White Collar (TV) - repeat for us, new to her, but we all love it so S, H and I don’t mind watching it again.

All this talk about Love Actually made me want to revisit it - it’s been ages since I’ve seen it. It’s not available on any of the streaming services I have, but I found it’s available for free streaming on the FreeForm app. Turns out that’s apparently the family-friendly, TV version. Not a curse word or porn stand-in or sex scene to be found. But ads. So so many ads. So, not saying I’d recommend it, but there’s a “cleaner” option available if anyone wants it.

Last night we watched About Time (Netflix) based on the recommendations here. I really liked it. It was a bit sappy for hubby, but he didn’t complain much and did laugh at funny parts.

There was a time travel theme, like another book/movie I like - The Time Traveller’s Wife.. Both have actress Rachel McAdams (from Notebook and other movies). About Time is more upbeat and not as intense, easier to understand.

My book club read The Time Traveller’s Wife years ago - loved it! Such a unique concept.

I know it is a series and not a movie, but if you are interested in time travel themes I also recommend Outlander

I saw West Side Story today. Good not great.

We like Outlander. But the bad guy Randall is so evil that we’ve had to fast forward through some of the scenes.

For time travels and TV, Timeless is our favorite by far. Our kids’ too. We were among those bummed when it got canceled, but I guess it was just too expensive to keep making all those period scenes instead of using the same ones over and over (or so one report I read on it said).

The prison scenes were pretty disturbing. The Lovely and Talented couldn’t watch, and she loved the series.

Anthony Lane is NOT HAPPY with the holiday movies!

My favorite part - closely related to CC - not sure if this is a Spiderman spoiler so…

Peter wants the past rearranged for his benefit, and why? Because, thanks to being unveiled as Spider-Man, he has—wait for it—failed to get into M.I.T . That’s right: universal chaos is unleashed for the sake of college admissions.

Watched Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings last weekend. We are not fans of superhero movies, but I noticed that Awkwafina was in it… so I convinced my husband to watch it, and the movie exceeded our expectations. The bus fight scene in San Francisco was great! IMO, Awkwafina was the star of the movie, not just a sidekick.

Been meaning to watch that. Loved Simu Liu in Kim’s Convenience.

I just watched Being the Ricardos (Amazon Prime) - meh…neither Nicole Kidman or Javier Bardem were cut out for these characters we’ve known all our lives. The costuming was on point, the music was spot on, the story was interesting (it really focused on Lucille Ball being accused of being a member of the communist party) but the script was pretty weak. Would I recommend it? Sure. It’s a little over 2 hours and I DO love Lucy so I was happy to revisit my old friends, the Ricardos and the Mertzes. Don’t expect to see a miracle and you won’t be disappointed. I rate it 2.5 out of 5.

Thanks for mentioning Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. We watched it last night, and I did like it better than some of the other superhero kind of movies. Hubby thought the plot was weak, but to me that is just how it is in this genre. It was a nice change of pace fro our usual viewing.

@JustaMom - Noticed the Lucy movie listing for the first time last night. Thanks for the review. We may give it a try, but I’m glad to have your thoughts beforehand to level set expectations.

I’m going to bump up the Ricardo rating a notch. I saw it last week in the theater and watched it again last night with the family. I wasn’t expecting to like it as much as I did and had been very skeptical of the casting of Nicole Kidman. As the movie progressed I felt like I was watching Lucy.

I will second the “meh” on Being the Ricardos. I am a huge I Love Lucy fan*, but it was just … boring. There are several Lucille Ball & Desi/Lucy biographies that do a better job to capture the dynamics of their relationship and careers.

*Maybe that’s the problem with Being the Ricardos for me. I already knew their history, nothing new.

So I have a throwback to a throwback recommendation. Last night I ended up watching both Brady Bunch movies from the 90s. They were hilarious. They were spoofs when they came out and now they are even funnier because they are making fun of both the 70s and the 90s. If you ever watched the Brady Bunch as a kid and have never seen these I highly recommend them for some levity. The kids were not watching with us so not sure how they would like it, but for DH and me they were really funny.

Agree! Not all movies need to be deep and thought-provoking. There is a place for what I call “bubble gum for the mind”. This movie fits the bill! I thought there was a tiny bit borrowed from Studio Ghibli animated classics, but maybe because all dragons :dragon: look alike -?
