Seen any good movies lately?

Me too. As I said above, when I saw Hidden Figures, there was spontaneous applause a couple of times during the movie, and lots at the end.

It’s not uncommon here for people to applaud at the end of a movie, but it sure doesn’t happen for every movie – maybe I see that happen a couple of times a year. Applauding during the movie, by some significant portion of the audience – that’s really rare.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard an audience clap at a movie other than Hidden Figures. It’s just such a feel-good movie and I think speaks to so many issues still haunting us today.

Curious what moments during hidden figures have the audiences been applauding ? I can think of a couple but not sure

When Katherine explained why her breaks were so long, for one. When Mary talked to the judge, for another.

People clapped at Patriot Games too.

People clapped in “rogue one” when Vader showed up and they heard James Earl Jones’ voice.

I guess I live in a button-downed, stoic area. No clapping.

I’ve also seen clapping when a movie, as a whole, was particularly well done. I don’t clap when a plane does an ordinary landing.

In 5th grade, we used to clap at the end of any film, some misplaced idea of manners. The 6th grade teacher got annoyed, said, not like the people you’re clapping for can hear you or will ever know. We got it.

But today, it’s a group response, an outpouring, much like a cheer. A moment of shared reaction. Fine by me, if I agree. Lol.

Nobody clapped when I saw Hodden Figures. That may be because the Sunday 9:45 AM show had six of us … I’m cheap and like to avoid crowds.

Six folks in a movie theater?! That’s my kind of movie outing! Going to see Six Figures tomorrow. Excited.

Clapping at movies is pretty rare around here as well. It was spontaneous and can’t remember if it happened during the movie – if so only during appropriate spots. It is fine with me and my friend and I clapped at the end. It was a well done movie and a story we hadn’t heard until the movie was made.

As women, both my friend and I have cracked a few glass ceilings in out time and it was good talking about that after the movie.

I just saw Hidden Figures last night. There were many times that I wanted to clap, but in this theatre, people clapped at the end. Watching that movie, it made me remember how I felt sometimes, and how I had been treated at times over the years. Certainly not as badly, but I definitely saw some similarities, in being stared at, underestimated, condescended to, and feeling like a freak.

Fortunately, I just read some reviews about the movie, compared to the reality, and it was not nearly as bad as portrayed. I guess it’s all about making a story, and a fair amount is true. Interesting that this is true:

This is an interesting link to the reality vs the movie:

I saw Lion and had to buy the book.
Incredible movie and book!
Now I want to see La la land.

I saw Fences last night. Wonderful acting and strong story. I understand why they used the play format, but I don’t really enjoy that, and hope it’s not done again. The beginning grated on me a little and Denzel was just talking too fast and too much that he lost me at times and my ears were getting tired. I think they were just trying to hone down what type of person he is.

Of the movies I’ve seen, I rank them for my enjoyability…not performance.

Hidden Figures
Lion
LaLa Land…almost a tie with Lion really.
Fences
Jackie

We saw Fences last night also. The acting was excellent but I didn’t enjoy the movie. The struggle and heartbreak were all to real, which speaks well of the movie but not what I prefer to experience when seeing a movie.

My DH liked it better than I did, probably because it hit home somewhat…

Spoiler…

FIL discouraged DH from going to college. Thankfully his parents were divorced and his mom had the main influence. He was the first person to attend college from his family. Throughout his life, he never told him how proud he was of him or the success he strained, he knew he loved him, but often felt FIL didn’t like that his son’s achieved more than him.

I’ve seen four of the movies vying for the best picture Oscar. My vote:

Hell or High Water
Lion
Hidden Figures
La La Land

I’ve only seen one of the nominated animated movies Moana and one of the foreign films A Man Called Ove. Both were good.

I’ve liked all the movies I’ve seen to varying degrees - La La Land definitely the least, though.

Not in the movies but on Netflix: “The People vs. O.J. Simpson” was very good. 10 part series so good for binge watching if you’re not into football today.

Last summer I saw “Jaws” on the beach (obviously most of us have seen it many times) and there was applause for “you’re gonna need a bigger boat” and when the shark blows up (spoiler alert.)

Jaws is one of those films I can re-watch umpteen times and still get excited. Like a cult favorite.
