@Nrdsb4 …that sound hilarious. I’ll try to find it on YouTube.
Watched Moonlight just in time for the Emmys…loved it and LaLa Land.
I finally saw Jackie – about which I have mixed feelings. The jumping back and forth in time made it confusing for me, even though I knew all of the story.
I hope Natalie Portman wasn’t already pregnant when any of it was filmed. All that smoking! She did a great job with the acting, though. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said of the guy who played Bobby Kennedy.
I could not get the movie Lion out of my head either.
I had to buy the book and read it which helped a lot and the book had all the answers I needed.
Love both the book and the movie.
Welp, not a fan of Arrival…
I am a bit surprised it got such rave reviews on Rottentomatoes as the whole movie filled with film tropes/cliches.
Kedi, about the street cats of Istanbul, which are beloved by residents. Kedi is Turkish for “cat.” The movie is subtitled. It’s basically a documentary, really an ode to both cats and the city. It’s only in the independent/arts theaters, but worth it if you like cats and can find it.
Thanks for the mention, @barbalot. It’s coming near me later in the month.
When we visited Morocco, the ancient medinas were similar with tons of street cats. I was amazed by how healthy the vast majority were. And nary a rat or mouse was ever seen.
Just left my meet up group where we critiqued another screenwriter’s script. I felt going in the log line was murky: A Bronx teenager is suddenly faced with fatherhood when the mother of his young daughter plans to attend an elite military academy.
I read the script; it was basically a serious Juno from (sometimes) the male POV. I felt like it was…bloodless. If there was an elevation map of the emotional landscape, it would be flat.
First time in this group. Just about everyone said some version of what I thought.
Writer was a little defensive. “I did a lot of research! I spoke to academics.” My comment: you wrote from the head, not the heart. At best, this would be a scripted documentary. Not a feature.
@gosmom mentioned Queen of Katwe back in November. I just saw it on DVD. Terrific movie, very beautiful and moving.
We saw Logan on cheap Tuesday. I am amazed that Jackman has played that role 17 years! It was violent but H was pleased we saw something he wanted.
@HImom Just saw it today. Very graphic and intense, for sure, but I liked it.
Preview for Wonder Woman this summer looked very good.
Yes, I am looking forward to Wonder Woman; we saw the previews when we watched another movie, I think Moana or Doctor Strange. She’s quite an athlete and pretty as well.
I watched Jackie via Amazon Prime this afternoon. Natalie Portman does a good job and the clothes are stunning, but I found myself saying that’s not accurate more than once. For example, the movie implies that Jackie was packing things (clothes & childrens’ toys) before the burial and that the Johnson’s moved into the White House earlier than they actually did. Artistic license, I suppose.
Well, deferring to H, we saw Kong: Skull Island last night. It was better than I had expected (though I went with very low expectations). It was partly filmed in Vietnam, Australia and Hawaii, and the scenery was fascinating. If you plan to go, do NOT watch the previews if you can avoid them (sadly, they showed previews when we watched Logan, but fortunately, I hadn’t remembered them). It’s definitely an action, adventure type movie, similar to Jurasic Park and World.
[Get Out](Get Out - Rotten Tomatoes) is incredible. What a movie–gripping, well made, and I even think important.
^^^^I watched the trailer yesterday. I don’t know…I don’t like scary, creepy movies.
I don’t either! In fact, it’s the first “scary” movie I’ve seen in years. But it’s so, so worth it.
It got 99% from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes. That might be a first for the genre.
99% is pretty high! The original Invasion of the Body Snatchers and Let The Right One In both got 98%, Psycho 96%, Wait Until Dark and the original The Postman Always Rings Twice 95%, and Carrie 93%. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari got 100%. Not sure where exactly the genre lines are, though.
Re: Get Out
I caught an interview with Jordan Peele on Fresh Air with Terry Gross.
http://www.npr.org/programs/fresh-air/
Peele described his film as a “Social Thriller”, and referenced The Stepford Wives several times in the interview.
I usually veto horror films, but after listening to the interview, I’m intrigued and want to see it!
