DH and DS saw Dunkirk the other night. They said it was extremely good. DH said he was anxious and on the edge of his seat from the very beginning to the very end. I want to see the Ape movie, too.
Just saw Dunkirk. A wonderful movie. As @doschicos says, it is full of tension. Very poignant , prepare for tears if you are at all prone to that! Harry Styles was great! A great ensemble cast. It will probably get nominated for lots of Oscars, for sure .
I am really looking forward to Dunkirk. I’ve seen several of the stars promoting the movie on various shows, but the best promo so far was Kenneth Branagh on The Late Show. He talks about the emotions he has experienced the 3 different times he has seen the film, etc. http://www.cbs.com/shows/the-late-show-with-stephen-colbert/video/tK3tRMS61oM0VYGJZMtZVhZWTzuxphnT/kenneth-branagh-watched-dunkirk-with-dunkirk-veterans/
War for the Planet of the Apes is on my radar. Maybe I’ll watch the first two of the trilogy tonight so I’m prepared. I looked at the reviews last night and the second is apparently better than the first but both got decent 75+ scores.
Saw Dunkirk today with D21 and my parents. It was amazing! Yes, tears were flowing by myself and my parents. So emotional and very well done all the way around!
And I love me some Mark Rylance!
I loved Mark Rylance in it and especially the scenes between he and his son, Peter.
I really liked “War for the Planet of the Apes” but I’m biased - I love ALL of the ape movies (see post #634). I thought this one was the best of the three. It’s pretty somber and more thoughtful than I thought it would be. It does make you think about what it means to be human.
I’ll be seeing it again! And yeah, I want to see “Dunkirk” too.
Yes, Rylance was superb! They all were!
DH and I just saw War for the Planet of the Apes today and really enjoyed it. We are also fans of all the ape movies, although there’s really no comparison between the recent trilogy and the movies from years ago. The special effects are truly amazing. We’ll probably go see Dunkirk next weekend. In general, I’m not a fan of war movies, but it’s getting such good reviews that I don’t want to miss it on the big screen. I’m glad to hear that it doesn’t have too much graphic violence.
I saw Dunkirk yesterday with son and g/f. Favorite scenes were Ryland and son. Only disappointment was that the message that churchilll gave for small boats to go out to rescue wasn’t as clear as could be. Some young people around me didn’t get how many volunteers showed up. I wish Emma Thompson had added some real footage at the end
Where does Emma Thompson fit into the movie, @bookworm? I didn’t know she was connected to the film.
I’m guessing @bookworm means Emma Thomas, a producer of the film, @doschicos . Emma Thompson( who I love), was married to Kenneth Branagh, who had a great role in Dunkirk. I actually thought it was made pretty clear in the movie that lots of small boats were involved .
I was aware of some of the history of Dunkirk before the movie. I did read up a little more before seeing it, so had that background. Being a British production, I have no doubt that the average Brit is much more aware of the details of Dunkirk than the average American. When you think about the hundreds of thousands removed from that beach, it is amazing. And had they not been, the world would be a very different place.
The recent movie “Their Finest” was about the British ministry of information’s effort to make a popular film about the civilian rescue at Dunkirk to foster support for the war both in Britain and America. Good movie.
SEVmom is correct. I was writing when tired. Still, at least 4 of the young people I was with didn’t get that so many small boats were involved. When I explained, they each said it was inferred but the message didn’t hit home.
“Hacksaw Ridge”. I hate the battle scenes but the overall movie is great.
@bookworm , I’m not sure we’re disagreeing about what was implied about the small boats. There were references to the small boats and scenes with small boats (not giving anything away with that). I am certainly not a young person but even I was not yet alive in 1940 when this took place . And purposely did not look up the specific numbers involved of boats and men involved before seeing the film (but did have a sense of the undertaking and numbers involved from seeing some interviews with those involved with the movie). But I do think the film makes it clear that it was a massive effort involved, by both military and ordinary citizens. . I have been impressed with the interviews with the young guys like Harry and Fionn, who have been very respectful of the story, wanting to do a good job of telling it , and their respect for the “community” effort it took to make any deliverance from Dunkirk happen.
Ya, the acting was terrific. I cannot imagine how they shot the scenes in the water with the fire on top. And the pilots, so good. Mostly it was the expressions on the men’s faces throughout. Definitely worth seeing.
My grandson and I loved War For The Planet Of The Apes. The music was excellent. Now I’ll have to watch the first two again. Might as well watch the one with Charlton Heston in it too.
Just saw “Baby Driver”, and was surprised my wife liked it as well. Very taught movie with some incredible chase sequences (the stunt drivers and the like must have loved this one…), and some really, really good actors in it. In trying to describe it I guess I would call it a combination of “The Getaway” kind of anti hero movie (Steve McQueen and Ali McGraw version), a Quentin Tarentino movie, and a love story. Jon Hamm is very good in it, he kind of plays an under the radar psycho who finally explodes, whereas Jamie Foxx is just plain psycho in it…the kid playing the title character is pretty amazing as well, and Kevin Spacey is, well, Kevin Spacey.Really well directed as well, the guy doing this did a really great job IMO.
