Seen any good movies lately?

Just saw The Post. It was like watching a bit of my childhood as my dad worked as a journalist in that era. I enjoyed it more than most people would probably.

If I was being objective, it was a little too earnest. But Meryl was great.

Just saw 4 movies on the airplane:
Murder on the Orient Express
Victoria and Abdul
Wonder (Auggie)
Kingsmen Golden Circle (ridiculous spoof of James Bondish films)

The movies were good (last one was very questionable but ok given the meager 8 films available on that flight). The acting was excellent for the first 3 movies and stories. I was in the middle of watching a Hamilton TV special when we landed so only saw 1/3 of it.

The original KIngsmen movie is so much better the sequel.

Both were airplane fodder. I’m glad I didn’t pay cash to watch it. The first was original and more interesting.

Just heard about this movie which sounds right up my alley: https://www.abacusmovie.com/
Anyone seen it or heard about it?

Wow—sounds like an excellent movie and absolutely shameful! It’s a disturbing reminder that racism against Asians continues, alive and well in the US, despite all the rhetoric to the contrary.

@HImom – totally agree about the continued racism. They were an easy target for the Manhattan DA.

A running friend who grew up in Hong Kong and worked at Lehman Bros told me about it. I knew of Abacus Federal since the '90s but I had no idea this happened. Sounds really terrible.

I experienced some racism in CA in the 80s but this is pretty blatant and on a national stage. I’m glad Frontline nade this movie and hope it gets the audience and discussion it deserves.

Game Night was funny, entertaining, and had surprising twists. Made by the same group who did the Horrible Bosses duo. It was in a similar vein and had great adult humor.

It’s The Game (Michael Douglas, Sean Penn 1997) 2.0 in comedy mode

I haven’t been on this thread in a while. This has probably been discussed already, but I really liked The Glass Castle. I didn’t look at any reviews until after I saw it, and I was very surprised that the reviews were so mixed. I thought it was a great movie.

Victoria and Abdul was excellent as was Wonder (Auggie). Both had a lot of food for thought.

@JHS
The other Japanese movie that I could think of that depicts the brutality of World War II from the perspectives of regular Japanese folks, is “24 eyes”. It is very well made and extremely sad, a very good anti-war movie in my mind. Just like “grave of the fireflies”, you won’t be able to keep your eyes dry.

I agree with you, there isn’t many Japanese movies that I have watched (I have watched many by Ozu, Kurusawa, and Koreeda) depicting the horrors done by Japanese government/military during the war (such as the brilliant South Korean movie about comfort women called “spirits’ homecoming”). I love Ozu’s movies, but whenever any of them mentions anything about the war, it often shows a group of mild-mannered gentlemen getting together drunk while reminiscing the war time…

If anyone wants to watch the recently mentioned Abacus for free, you can do so on PBS.

Worth the watch. Not too long, about 1hr 24min.

Saw “The Post” yesterday. Very much enjoyed it.

Agree Abacus expose is a good thing. Hate all racism. Very difficult to watch the family go from pride to pain but finally to exoneration.

Finally saw Coco on Redbox. DH and I both enjoyed it immensely.

@rosered55, thanks so much for recommending “Last Cab to Darwin”. We watched it last night (free on Netflix). We lived in Australia for 5-1/2 years and spent lots of time in Darwin, a bit in Alice, and it was so good to hear the voices and see the scenery. It was such a moving story, just beautifully acted. I am so glad I saw it, and I had forgotten all about it until I saw your post.

And of course, Michael Caton is a legend. If you haven’t seen “The Castle”, I highly recommend it.

@doschicos – thanks for letting us know! Free is always good. Appreciate it.

Red Sparrow starring JLaw is very violent.

The Big Short–enjoyed it. There were very clever explanations of complex financial instruments like CDOs. Plus, I love anything with Christian Bale!
