I got the same thing too
" Your FAFSA has been selected for a review process called verification. Your
school has the authority to request copies of certain financial documents from
you and your parent(s)."
AND

" The Social Security Administration did not confirm that you are a U.S.
citizen. You must provide your school with documentation of your citizenship
status before you can receive federal student aid."

So i have two questions. First why did my FAFSA been selected for verification. And what's up with the U.S. citizen thing. Btw i just got my citizenship around October and i finished making correction on my fafsa in early february (EFC 630)

I read in my college's website that FAFSA chooses %30 of the applicants randomly to be verified. So it doesnt have anything to do with being poor, rich or qualifying for aid or not.

I got the same thing. If they ask me for my 1040 form they will see a difference from what my income tax form says and my FAFSA. I filed for 2006-2007 a couple days ago. My Dad passed away in 2005. The 2006-2007 year is 2005 taxes. I called the FAFSA contact number and they said that I don't include my Dad's income. My Dad is the only one who worked. That means my families income is $0 for 2005 with my FAFSA O_O! I hope they have some way to find out my Dad passed away or they will think I am trying to cheat them :(

Acere is correct....about 1 in every 3 applications is automatically selected for verification. This is one of the many ways that the Department of Educations ensures that schools and students are doing what they are supposed to do. It doesn't mean something has been done incorrectly...or that you will automatically become ineligible for need-based aid. I have tons of students who have gone through the verification process who maintain their zero EFC's. And FAA's know it can be a hassle, especially if you have a large tax return...we are sympathetic and many times wish we didn't have to request the verification documents.

So.. if we lose any of those documents, can we re-order from the IRS? Also, what forms did they mean when they said we won't have 'til April for them to check?

If you lose copies of your tax returns, you can order a transcript from the IRS. If you lose W2 forms, you can request copies from the IRS or from your employer. If the school said to wait until April for new forms...they are probably referring to the verification documents that are school-oriented, such as the Verification Worksheet and Worksheet ABC. Depending upon how the school performs their verification checks, it may take them until April to send that type of information to students, especially if they want to give students/parents enough time to actually file their tax returns.

The school has the authority to ask for documents. This sounds like one shouldn't go ahead and send them until they are requested.

Send what?.. The sooner you send the FAFSA, the sooner you'll know whether or not you'll be "randomly" chosen for verification.

my parents are divorced...fafsa said use only the parent im being held custody of...but i included my dad's child support stipend in fafsa. my college wants to see my parent's w-2 forms....so do i just give in my mom's?

so.....does that mean my school wont have my financial aid package ready until i have sent in verification? definitely send in verfication ASAP?? wow good thing I read this thread...i completely dismissed that message because I thought the school had to request verification first.

I dunno about your situation.. But my FAFSA report said I needed verification. I called up FAFSA, they said all schools should need verifcation.. Then I called up a possible college I'm going to, and they said wait til Aprilish for some more documents we haven't gotten yet,

It has been our experience that each university differs in how they handle this. My DD first year, no verification was asked for by fafsa and none by the school. Second year, got a letter from the school asking for verification paperwork. Both years received financial aid packages prior to the verificaiton, so don't worry, they will still process you and let you know what they'll offer you.

With my DS, his univeristy asks for the verification paperwork from everyone. Yes everyone, then they are prepared when fafsa asked for the paperwork. I had a hard time with that one, since I felt it was not necessary unless fafsa asked for it. But ofcourse, I did what I needed to make sure he got his aid.

the timing of your application is really irrelevant to whether you are selected for verification. Since I am still a student...and still relying on FA myself...I always submit mine the first week of January...and I have yet to be pulled for verification....4 years running now.

OK so San Jose State University had asked me to do the following: Citizenship Status, Dependent Verif W/Sheet, and Student Certification. ALL have deadline at March 30!

Because i was selected for FAFSA verification, i have to do this for every school I want to attend. But since the U.C. haven't giving out acceptance letter yet, do i have to wait until then to fill out all the paper since SJSU is my second choice and a UC school would be my first. So should I wait until I know that i got accepted to one of the UC school and then do the verification or just do one for SJSU just to meet the deadline and another one for the UC?
