Selected for FAFSA verification!

Score! So what happens now..

We were selected for verification for three years...and our kid didn't receive a nickel of need based aid. Go figure. You just send what they tell you to send...to wherever they tell you to send it. We had to send all W-2 forms, 1099, 1098, and signed tax returns (including all schedules) for the kid and ourselves. Truthfully, the hardest part was making the copies.

How do you know if you are selected for FAFSA verification?

After you complete the FAFSA, print out your SAR. It's in the section following the SAR entitled "What you must do now."

looks like I got it too.

Your FAFSA has been selected for a review process called verification. Your
school has the authority to request copies of certain financial documents from
you and your parent(s).

No big thing. Just make sure your family tax returns match your final FAFSA input.

I got the same thing.

We've had to do this every single year. Thumper is right; making the copies is the hardest part, followed by making sure the college doesn't misplace anything.

No aid at all? What happened..

I got it last year, it's no big deal. Just make the copies and fill out the form they tell you to do. Here's a tip, send the papers with delivery confirmation. This is the type of mail you can't afford to get lost.

We did not qualify for need based aid. The college required the FAFSA and Profile for incoming freshman for ALL types of aid (even merit aid), and the FAFSA for renewal of merit aid (until last year when that was eliminated also). Still...we were selected for verification each of the years we completed the FAFSA for DS. You would think that verification would only be for those who they were giving need based aid to...to verify that they were indeed eligible for it. I thought it was a huge waste of someone's time verifying that what we put on our FAFSA indeed did NOT make us eligible for need based aid.

So it was what it seemed in that you were too rich.. better than no aid for being too poor with messed up forms :D

Please tell me if this is correct --

The school has the authority to ask for documents. This sounds like one shouldn't go ahead and send them until they are requested.

We waited until the school requested our info. But you can call them and ask...better safe than sorry.

I have no idea why we were selected; we're poor :D!!

No seriously, only one school has requested tax forms so far, and that was before we even completed the FAFSA!

I made extra copies of the tax forms; I guess I can expect more requests, huh?

Man.. How am I going to copy ?40 sheets of paper?:D

How do you figure 40 pages? You have to include your 1040 (which is all of 2 pages) and any schedules (we had 4 schedules to include...four additional pages). We put our w-2 forms on a piece of paper together (they are small) and copied those. Total, we had less than 10 pages. The W-2 forms for my kids were one page 1040EZ with their w-2's on one page copied also. If you have 40 pages, you must have mighty complicated tax returns. I guess we don't.

Har har.. Well I got this 10 page folder from my mom that I derived numbers from to put on the FAFSA.. So not so painful I guess..:)

Hm, that statement shows up for me as well. So I don't have to send anything in yet, right?

I called my school and they said wait 'til ~April for some new papers..
