selected for verification but taxes were already linked to FAFSA

DS20 is admitted to four colleges, all in Texas. FAFSA was completed several weeks ago and I did the link-to-IRS for our information. Two of the colleges have said he was selected for verification; one college (the larger college, in fact) had almost no explanation of what was needed. The much, much smaller college had a detailed list of instructions. I followed the instructions for Smaller College, did all the steps, but FAFSA already says our tax info was transferred from IRS to FAFSA. (In other words, what their instructions were asking us to do already appears to be done.) So what else are we supposed to do?? I’ve emailed Larger College twice (one from me, one from son’s email) to ask, but haven’t gotten a reply yet.

The only thing I can think is DS did not work in 2018 and so had no tax return for that year. Maybe we need to get the non-filer letter for him??

Many Admissions offices are very busy right now. I’ve had to email some over the past couple of weeks and the response time varied from 1 day to 4 days. I’d wait for them to respond.

You won’t need to submit tax information for yourself, although they could request W-2 forms. You will need to fill out all paperwork & follow their non-filer instructions for your S. There is plenty of time. While the October 1st date to file FAFSA is nice for students, it’s hard on aid offices. They just got fall aid done and are trying to get spring aid set. They are working on aid processes for next fall but may not be there quite yet. Just keep watching for more information.
