I'm a sophomore at an inner city school. I've looked at some of the fees for SAT prep classes and with twins I do not believe my mother can afford it. I want to be successful on the SAT. I'll probably take it the second semester of my junior year or earlier. What prep books can guarantee me an acceptable score?

the official one from college board, get the 2nd edition which has 10 practice tests

Also buy Direct Hits for vocabulary. A fun read through and it makes learning vocabulary semi-interesting.

Self studying the SAT can be even more beneficial than taking a prep class. I scored a 175 on my PSAT sophomore year, and ended up with a 2360 on the real SAT senior year after several practice tests and study guides.

Absolutely read the guides here on cc silverturtle, Xiggis and other info at the top of this forum page. They are the stickied posts so they always stay on top. Also, the template on how to write a 12 essay in 10 days. Good luck!

One suggestion for using the Collegeboard book. The first 3 tests are real retired SAT tests. Save doing those three for a true practice test after you have done some of the others so you can see what your actual score would be. The other 7 give you a score range for the #right you got, not a single score.

Can you tell me what study guides did you use to study for your SAT or PSAT?

I got Barron’s guide, Kaplan’s 12 practice tests and Princeton Review’s.
