Self study Physics C or Music Theory?

I am currently going to be a senior enrolled in high school, and I was thinking of self studying an ap test this year, however Im stricken between Physics C or Music Theory. I plan to major in Mechanical or Aerospace engineering, however I want to also play music for the rest of my life.

My junior year i took AP English Language and AP Physics B. I earned a 4 on English and a 3 on Physics B, and next year I'm signed up for AP Lit, Calc AB and Us Gov. These 3 classes combined with Jazz Band and Marching band give me 5 classes, so its a light schedule.

My original plan was to take Physics C as an independent study in my B teacher's class and earn a grade and class credit based on curriculum he'd assign me. I love physics, and found it to be easy once I understood how to approach any problem, being one of few who actually passed the ap exam.

However I'm also an avid musician, arranging pieces for a separate band I'm in, and being one of the top players at my school. I have perfect pitch and have a passion and great knowledge for music. Self studying Theory with our schools choir teacher would be my other option. And I believe I'd also earn class credit based on my work.
Tldr; I love both Music and Physics, and want to self study either. I'd like to have 6 classes max instead of all 7, and still have a life outside of school and extracurricular activities. Which class would I be better off studying in?

I self-studied both Physics Cs and got 5s. It…wasn’t easy.

If you have a solid background in music, which it sounds like you do, self-studying for AP Music Theory would be doable. The part-writing sections of the exam are very formulaic, as one would expect of Bach four-part harmony. My musical background sounds similar enough to yours, and I absolutely slaughtered this exam.

You would probably stand to get more out of AP Music Theory, seeing as the theory taught in the class is actually very important for general musical literacy and whatnot, and you definitely don’t know all of it right now. I definitely did not absorb the AP Physics C material during my self-study…but hey, I did place out of those classes in college.

I would self study theory since the choir director is able to help you. I don’t usually recommend self studying it unless you have a private instructor (which you kind of will) since aural skills are difficult to build without guidance.
