So next year, I'm planning on doing the IB Diploma next year as a junior. My projected schedule is:

IB English HL Yr. 1
IB History of the Americas
IB Biology HL Yr. 1
IB Math SL Yr. 2
French 3
Theory of Knowledge/ and maybe one trimester of Band

So I'm thinking of maybe "self-studying" (not completely) some AP Courses that somewhat correspond with my IB classes. I'm thinking of doing AP Lit because it sounds like the IB English class reads a few books and analyze them a lot or something and I know that the AP Lit test makes you write essays analyzing books;I might do AP U.S. History along with IB HoA, but I'm not really sure yet. I'm pretty decent at history, but I think I'll wait on my decision probably until a few months into the year. I know some people that took the APUSH test while taking HoA, but had to do some extra self-studying. I think I'll self-study AP Calculus for sure along with my Math SL class. Math is one of my stronger subjects, and I know a lot of people at my school took the AP Calc AB test. I'm just kind of pondering if I should take the AB test, or maybe self-study a bit to take the BC test.
I honestly don't know about Biology. I took IB Prep Biology last year as a Freshman and I'm pretty good at the subject, but that's besides the point. Ever since we had the IB program at my school, IB Biology has been an SL course spanning only one year. Next year, along with Chem SL/HL, my school is spanning IB Biology over 2 years and at the end of the 2nd year, we decide whether we want to take the SL test or the HL test. So, I honestly doubt I'll self-study AP Biology until the 2nd year if I wanted to.

What do you guys think?

For what purpose would you do that? Colleges will offer equivalent credit for IB HL and AP. I could see taking the AP Calc exam since you’re only studying Math SL.

@skieurope Are you talking about Biology? I said I might not even do AP Bio.

No, I was referring to English and History.

Well for English, I would have to wait until Sr. Year to take the test, and idk. I just kind of want to try it out, but I’m not sure if I’ll do it in the end.
History, I’m honestly not sure if I’ll even do it either. And I heard on here that the APUSH test is being revised for next year, so that might be out of the option anyways.
And for the credit, in general I’ve heard that getting a 5 on an AP test is easier than getting a 7 on an IB test.
So, idk…

IBs don’t let you self study.

@Apollo11 I didn’t really mean full-out self study. I thought people would catch that. I just meant that my IB classes could fulfill a good amount of the material required for the AP equivalents and I would probably would only have to do a bit of preparing for the AP test.

@Animefan1998

Oh, I see [OIC]. In that case, I know the IBs are more akin to the SAT IIs than the APs.

Yeah, for the most part they are more in line with the equivalent SAT II than the AP.

I’m a sophomore, and I did this same thing this year. I’m taking IB Economics, IB Chemistry 1-2 (the first year of the HL course), IB Chinese 7-8 (the fourth level out of five), and IB HL Math. I tested in AP Macro/Microeconomics, Calculus BC, Chinese, Stats, and English Language.

Calculus BC, Chinese, and English were fine (I’m in Accelerated American Lit 3-4). They were close enough to IB classes for me to do all right on that front. I did buy Barron’s prep books, though.
Very little of what was covered in Stats was also covered in IB HL Math. I basically just crammed using a prep book.
The two Econs actually somewhat correlated with IB Econ, but there were definitely some topics that I had to self-study.

So if you’re going to take AP Exams–which I wouldn’t recommend unless you’re not getting your Diploma (why I did it) or if a school you might go to offers credit for AP but not IB–make sure you get prep books, and start studying by at least January.

Good luck!
