From what I understand from reading this entire topic, it should be.

How would highly selective colleges look at it if I self-studied 5-6 AP exams in one year considering the fact that my school doesn’t offer any APs?

I’m trying Chem next year. Any advice? Should I got for Microeconomics rather than chem?
I’m also hitting Human Geo and World Hist.
Any advice would be really helpful:)

Is the MIT Open course ware combined with NROC College Board outline a good way to self study for the AP Physics C course. Will it work studying it the same time as studying Calculus>

I will be taking 2 APs in 11th grade this year. Psych and Spanish Lang. I want to study for either Human Geo OR USH, and Eng Lang for sure, on my own. My question is how do I study for English Lang without the class because the exam is different and I dont think theres any memorizing? How many hours should be spent per week on each of the above tests?

Another question I have…does it sound too much for me to take these AP CLASSES in 12th grade: AP Bio, AP Eng Lit, and AP Stat/Calc, and [(possibly take) AP Span Lit OR (self-study) AP USH]? And is it better to take Calc or Stats-which is easier?

I’m trying to get college graduation requirements out of the way so I can focus on just my major in college (BIOLOGY/Neurology & Physiology).

I’m asking all of this because I have only taken one AP so far (US Gov) and Im not sure this is all possible.

AP human geography IS easy. I took a class, but the teacher was terrible; my studying was fairly comparable to independent study, although I did have a small degree of extrinsic motivation. It was one of my first APs; I only read perhaps one-third of the book; I didn’t study – and I still got a five, much to my surprise. And a lot of the information is actually really interesting. If someone’s looking to self-study in a humanities subject, you might want to consider it.

How did you study for it? Which textbook is the best? Is the AP exam mostly vocab and memorizing or understanding concepts?

Human Geography:

Buy the Barrons’ book+ read it a few times = Easy 5 on the test.

So, is Barron’s or Princeton Review better for self studying AP World History?
Also, would it be feasible to take the Physics B exam after taking an Honors Physics course and reading a prep book with practice tests, etc.
Or is the material far beyond that of a first year high school physics course?
Thanks!
Wow. You people are lucky.
At my school, there are only two AP courses offered…

This thread is an amazing treasure cove of information! I’ll be self studying Psych and Enviro. Science, in addition to my regular APs this year.

However, I do have a question. My school doesn’t offer AP Chem, so I’m stuck in an accelerated Chem class instead. I’m planning on taking the AP test anyway, so should I stick with PR, which I hear is more concise, but doesn’t go into as much depth, or Barron’s, which I hear provides more indepth information but tends to be information overload for the class.

Thanks a lot!

Take the classes that correspond to classes you will definitely be taking in college to save money. 14 AP classes on an application as opposed to 7 will make no difference in the eyes of admissions officers, but you will have spent 630 more dollars on irrelevant and occasionally idiotic classes (Human Geography…). Play a sport or instrument, join a club or cause, write, read, draw, get a great girlfriend/boyfriend to spend time with, but don’t waste your parents’ money and your time that could be spent enjoying life.

I respect your passion to achieve and succeed and get accepted into a great school, all I’m saying is that some of that passion might be better spent elsewhere.

oasis
should i take ap eng lang or lit exams if im gonna be in honors eng this upcoming school year? my junior eng teacher didnt rec me for ap, but i still want the college credit and to save money
how hard would it be to self study for ap eng?
also im currently taking dual enrollment eng 1 class(composition/reading) this summer, will this help?

So, I got my AP Scores back today and they were all 3s (except for Spanish, which was a 5). These were all self-studies, since I’m in a [■■■■■■■■] program that doesn’t let us take AP courses.

Should I still report them?

Question: I’ll be taking Physics C: Mechanics this coming year. Will it be easier to self-study C: E&M or B?

Would it be a good idea to self-study AP Psychology after taking regular psychology classes first semester? (Also taking APUSH, AP Lang. and AP Chem courses)

YES, self-study AP Psych dotdude… it is not a hard test and is basically knowing vocab terms that are easy to remember. Get Barron’s and maybe PR to go with it and you are in wonderful shape. Everything you need to know is in Barron’s. I read through it, did all of the practice tests and got an easy 5. Good luck! Oh, and do the FRQ’s on the collegeboard web site.

Ok I will probably do that then. And my school does not offer AP psych. as a course officially will it be hard to register for the test?

Shouldn’t be…

dotdude - it should be easy. I had a friend who was the first student in our school to take the physics C exam (he dual enrolled in physics with calc 1 at the local college). All you have to do is go to your school’s AP Coordinator (usually an assistant principal) and tell him that you want to order the exam. It’s up to the school to set you up with a proctor and a testing space.

I’ll probably make a thread for this later but I don’t want to poison the forum with an extra thread until closer to school’s start :p

My tentative AP schedule, please tell me what you think:

Calculus AB (online course)
English Lit (In school)
Computer Science A (Already took a class for it but couldn’t take the test)
World History (Self-study) (Shouldn’t be much of a hassle, I love world history and basically research it in my spare time for fun)
Physics either B or C: Mechanics (I’m taking honors physics and I’m going to try to expand what I learn so that I can take an AP test. So it’s sorta a self-study)
Psychology (self-study)
MAYBE: European History (self-study) it depends on how stressed out I am by second semester whether I do this or not.
